SciFi Superfans BlogTUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2009 We haven't seen him on the big screen in a while, as he's been relegated to direct-to-DVD movies, much like his contemporary Steven Seagal. However, he is due to co-star in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming "The Expendables" and just teamed up again with Jean-Claude Van Damme for a new "Universal Soldier" movie. Could 2010 be a comeback year for Lundgren? I doubt we'll see him pick up an Oscar nom anytime soon, but this trailer looks like mindless fun. "Universal Soldier: Regeneration" will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on January 5. LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/24/2009 5:53:34 PM MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2009 According to Variety, Joshua Jackson has signed on for a movie adaptation of "UFO." This was a 1970 British series from Gerry Anderson, the guy behind all those marionette shows like "Thunderbirds." I've never seen an episode of "UFO," but the pictures above look pretty camp. I'm assuming they are going for a comedic angle with this plot: Jackson will star as Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts. If handled right, this could be a good sci-fi comedy, along the lines of "Galaxy Quest." At the very least, I hope it's better than the live-action "Thunderbirds" movie with Bill Paxton. That was pretty bleak. Any "UFO" fans out there? LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/23/2009 11:41:27 AM FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2009 James Cameron is nothing if not ambitious. As I mentioned before, "Avatar" better be one of the highest grossing films of all time if it wants to see any kind of profit. I've had reservations about the whole project, but the latest footage intrigues me. Here is a closer look at "Avatar," as seen through the eyes of Colonel Quaritch. LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/20/2009 2:12:31 PM THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2009 Sci Fi Wire has spotted a story on Minnesota Daily about some new Klingon translation software. A linguist who is working on the software, d'Armond Speers, decided to conduct an experiment on his son 15 years ago. Upon the son's birth, Speers only talked to him in Klingon. This experiment lasted for three years! "I was interested in the question of whether my son, going through his first language acquisition process, would acquire it like any human language," Speers said. "He was definitely starting to learn it." He was definitely starting to learn it?! That doesn't sound like a very successful experiment! I'm a pretty hardcore sci-fi nerd, but this seems bizarre. What do you think about only teaching a child Klingon for the first three years of his life? Is it cool or a case of SuperFandom gone wrong? LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/19/2009 9:48:08 AM MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2009 It's about a man who works for a real estate company. He's terrible at his job, but is great at playing Monopoly. After a marathon session of Monopoly, this man finds himself waking up in Monopoly City. Producer Frank Beddor wrote the story and pitched it to Ridley Scott. Surprisingly, the director said he wanted to make it. He told Beddor, "Yeah, and I will tell you why – it’s all the things you just said and the fact that I had these epic Monopoly battles with my family when I was young.'" Beddor confirmed to Los Angeles Times that Uncle Pennybags (pictured) will be a character in the film. What do you think about this project? LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/16/2009 8:59:07 AM KEYWORD TAG: RIDLEY SCOTT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2009 No kidding, folks. The director of "Attack of the Crab Monsters" and "Teenage Caveman" is about to receive an Academy Award! B-movie king Roger Corman has been involved with over 350 films, but he probably never expected to win an Oscar. He will be the recipient of an honorary Academy Award this year, celebrating his contributions to Hollywood. "I predicted that I would not win because I make low-budget films, and I felt the academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films. I was truly surprised when I got the call," said Corman. He's not just known for all his low budget movies, of course. He also gave big breaks to many young filmmakers and actors who went on to become famous. These include Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron, Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson. LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/11/2009 5:07:17 PM TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2009 So, how much would the film have to make in theaters before investors begin to relax? The Times claims that it would have to make at least $250 million in domestic ticket sales. Do you think "Avatar" will make a profit? LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/10/2009 9:10:55 AM WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 04, 2009 Apparently, Jerry Bruckheimer thinks he's in the same league as director David Lean. According to SciFi Wire, Bruckheimer recently likened "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" to the 1962 epic "Lawrence of Arabia." I think he should lower expectations a bit and say things like, "Well, it's not as bad as that 'Double Dragon' movie." Still, this trailer is enough to make me want to sit through the film. I guess I didn't learn my lesson after "Tomb Raider." Watch it and tell me what you think! LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/4/2009 3:44:07 PM TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 03, 2009 Not only did Kurt Russell read for the part of Han Solo in "Star Wars," there is video evidence and it's awkward, to say the least. Cinematical dug up this little jewel: LAST UPDATE BY AMY.COTTRELL AT 11/4/2009 2:54:14 PM MONDAY, NOVEMBER 02, 2009 Wanna wear a robotic exoskeleton like Ripley in "Aliens?" With the Dual-Arm Power Amplification Robot by Activelink, you can do just that. This new invention gives users super-human strength, making it possible to lift more than 200 pounds. They say it is being developed for "disaster relief," but we know it's best for kicking some Xenomorph butt! This is just a prototype, however. The fully operational Power Loader from Activelink probably won't be ready until 2015. It is estimated that a pair of the robotic arms will cost $329,000. A small price to pay for the survival of the human race, don't you think? From obscure cult films to mainstream popcorn movies, I am up for just about anything. I also read comic books and my house is a shrine to Jack Kirby, Jules Verne and Joss Whedon. So, I'm not the kind of girl who watches the Style Network. My earliest memories in life are watching "Star Trek" reruns with my mom every night during Kindergarten. She let me stay up late for them, good woman. MORE ABOUT ME >>
