As an Arthur Dent and Artemis Fowl fan, I completely enjoyed the new book, "And Another Thing" (and 'completely enjoyed' = snorted out loud at least ten times.) You forget how, when reading an H2G2 book, some of the tangents make your head spin. I can only imagine that Douglas Adams had a hard time finishing household projects or that Eoin may have needed to take naps between writing chapters of this sixth book. I had the good fortune to see Douglas Adams when I was ¿15? and he was in town with "Last Chance to See" (which is now a BBC documentary series with Stephen Fry.) Seattle was Eoin's last U.S. book tour stop, so I was pleased as punch on Friday to get a few minutes with him just before his event. Which happened to be in conjunction with Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry, also on tour for their new book, "Peter and the Sword of Mercy." There's loads of great interviews and articles chronicling the passing of the Guide gauntlet. I don't care a Vogon's flipper about that controversy, so I'm leaving it to those that do. Here are my few minutes with Eoin: Bound: I have a couple of goofy questions for you. Eoin Colfer: Well, when you write about farting leprechauns, there's always going to be a couple of goofy questions. I saw your chat today on Suvudu and the great ComicCon interview, so maybe we can just chat. What are you reading right now? Just started to reread "The Last of the Mohicans." Always loved the book and movie, much denser than I remember, but it's good! I'm really enjoying it. Innocent brand smoothies – don't know if you have them here in America, but the strawberry and banana flavor. Favorite book of the H2G2 series? The second one. Actually I treat the first two as one book. I think that it is kind of one book cut in half.
(Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson are also here, judging an Intergalactic Space Swimsuit Competition in the background, while Eoin is slaving away on this interview) Which of them (Dave or Ridley) is more like Zaphod? Oh, well, Dave is more like all of the characters, IN SPACE, and Ridley is more like the humans. Ridley would be like me, but Dave's definitely an alien. I think he really is an alien, so... I think I would have to agree with you. A good alien! You know, benign, not kill-y, not a destroying-the-world sort of alien. On purpose at least. Yeah, well, maybe accidentally. I've known for a while that it was picked up by ImageMovers. But you never know how far it is going to go. But now, apparently, its got a director and it is being scripted at the moment. And they're doing their sketches. And it's looking really good, it looks like it is actually going to go ahead pretty quickly. Yes, it is still being developed. I'm hoping that it will kind of move on to another level this year especially with the new Artemis Fowl book, The Atlantis Complex, coming out soon. I'm hoping that will push it over the top, as they say. National Bookstore Day is November 7th. What's your Best Bookstore? There's a bookshop in Wexford where I live called The Book Centre. And I've had a long and happy relationship with them. I think they sell more of my books per capita than anybody else in the world. It is great, very friendly, and I have some really nice friends there. They have their own coffee shop so you can take your books and sit down and get a coffee and browse. What do you think is in a Dragon Slammer? (see pg. 76 of "And Another Thing" for a drink that rivals the Galactic Blaster.) ... Jägermeister? I've never tasted this Jägermeister. I think it is one of these drinks that can be very innocent, but when you drink it at the wrong temperature it turns brutally vicious. Thanks Eoin! Also check out the bevy of virtual promotions for the new book – a twitter thing, fun book website and game, you can even get a limited edition exploding earth egg chair here.
