2000: The year 2000 heralds the era of reality TV as we know it, though some worthy shows had been using the format for years, including MTV's ""The Real World." This year, however, TV viewers are introduced to reality competition via the mega-hit "Survivor" (and the introduction... more of the phrase "voted off the island"). Also airing this year was a show that would be a precursor to every tawdry, ridiculous, skanky dating show that would come later: "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?" featuring slightly shady real estate investor and standup comic Rick Rockwell and a bevy of lovely gold-diggers, including the blushing bride, Darva Conger. They wed in February, reportedly never consummated the relationship, and had the whole thing annulled in April. Conger milked her mini-fame on reality reunion shows but married, for real, in 2003; Rockwell returned to standup comedy and reportedly is a flight instructor in California.
