'Insidious: Chapter 2' and other movies featuring haunted families

These family trees are quite possessed

You wouldn't wish this sort of thing on your worst enemy, or worst neighbor. No, not even that one who wakes you up on weekends with yard work, or the one who disturbs the neighborhood peace with his loud music and/or even-louder children.

"This sort of thing" would happen to be the haunting, possession and/or supernatural terrorizing of a home, family member or entire family. That storyline has become a staple of horror movies, such as the surprising 2011 hit "Insidious." Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne starred as James and Renai Lambert, the parents of a young, comatose child, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), who has been targeted, apparently, by malevolent entities.

If the trailers can be believed, its sequel, "Insidious: Chapter 2," picks up the story where the first one left off. Not to spoil anything for those who haven't seen the first movie, but the original "Insidious" definitely left things open to a follow-up film, and it left fans wanting more. (Let's just say that at least one member of the Lambert family didn't escape from The Further, a spirit realm, unscathed).

The first "Insidious" primarily found its audience on home video, but the second installment will try to capitalize on the recent success of "The Conjuring," a recent horror smash hit that was also directed by Wan, coincidentally enough. "Chapter 2" is certainly being released at the right time: Sept. 13, which conveniently falls on a Friday this year.

To help you get in the mood for the movie, here are some other, memorably spooky horror films in which spiritual or similar entities menaced families.

"Insidious: Chapter 2" is out in theaters Friday, Sept. 13.
