Parallel Universe looks at the year's hits, misses and 'almost's
By Don Kaye
2012 is coming to a close, which means it's time for us to look back at the horror, sci-fi, comic book and fantasy movies of the past 12 months and see how they stack up: the hits, the misses and the "almost"s, or the movies that tried hard but didn't quite have what it took to be a complete success.
This was the year of the huge superhero stare-down -- Batman vs. the Avengers vs. Spider-Man -- and we're happy to say that two of the three emerged as winners. There were other surprising triumphs as well, and plenty of failures, including a couple of releases that ranked as major disappointments for fans who had looked forward to them for months.
So let's get to it, shall we? And don't forget, even as 2012 slips into the history books, we've got 2013 just ahead: "Man of Steel," "Pacific Rim," "Iron Man 3," "Star Trek Into Darkness," "Elysium," "The Wolverine," "World War Z" "Thor: The Dark World," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Ender's Game" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" are all coming our way ...
