Thoughts and feelings from this morning's Oscar nominations ... ah ...

Get the full list of nominees

10) Nobody should have to see "film critic" Ben Lyons break down ANYTHING at 5:30 in the morning. Or anytime. I shouldn't have watched the nominations on E!. "I've been at Sundance... it's great to be here." ... "It's gonna be a 'Slumdog' morning!"... "Marisa Tomei... naked at 40! Whoo!"... This guy is brutal and an offense to his profession. Ok on to the nominations...

9) First gasps arise as Taraji P. Henson's name is called for Supporting Actress for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" ... You may not know her name, but this is the first wonderful, deserving surprise of the morning. And "Button" leads the way with 13 nominations. Damn. That's one away from the record of 14 for "Titanic" and "All About Eve." When did the Academy finally start getting smart?

8) Another gasp when Michael Shannon's name is called out for "Revolutionary Road." He plays a mentally challenged man who acts as the voice of reason in this overwrought mess of a movie. He gives one of the best performances of 2008 in ... a little movie called "Shotgun Stories." So despite being stuck in "Rev. Road," I am pleased to hear his name this morning.

7) And that is it for the overwrought piece of garbage "Revolutionary Road!" No Best Director for hack Sam Mendes (yes, people ... "American Beauty" sucked too ... and "Road to Perdition" ... the man wields a sledgehammer as his creative tool). No Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio! No Best Actress for Kate Winslet! Nothing for screenplay! Wow ... the Academy saw through this sham of a film. I'd like to thank the Academy! And my mom! And ... sorry!

6) Speaking of Kate Winslet ... she won for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes for "The Reader," which made no sense since she is in, oh, 60-70% of the film and the central focus. The Academy righted this mistake and nominated her in the Lead Actress category. And it is a better performance than in "Revolutionary Road" (have I mentioned how excited I am that ... never mind). Her problem, however, is her chances of winning that elusive Oscar (this is her sixth nomination, and she didn't win any of the previous five) have been cut in half. And she has MAJOR competition in her category this year.

5) Best Actor: No Leo or Clint ... the latter is a stunner. I haven't been a big Clint fan over the past decade, but the dude deserved a nomination this year for "Gran Torino." But so did Richard Jenkins for "The Visitor," and holy crap, the Academy watched the free screeners that were sent to them! It was a wonderfully sad performance and justified. Plus, no surprise ... but I got emotional seeing Mickey Rourke nominated. People, go see "The Wrestler" this weekend. It opens wide.

4) Best Actress: Sally Hawkins was robbed. Her performance in Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky" was the best of the year. Not only was she snubbed, but the film was shut out completely, outside of a screenplay nomination. Also, Kristin Scott Thomas in "I've Loved You So Long" is better than anyone nominated here. The Academy nominating Jolie and Streep made a weak category even weaker this year. Melissa Leo was a nice surprise for "Frozen River," however.

3) Ron Howard. Best Director nominee AGAIN. Does he have nude photos of the Academy members?

2) "The Reader" shocks the world. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress. Yet again, Hollywood proves that anything about the Holocaust gets recognition. Even if it sucks.

1) Oh, "Dark Knight" fans ... come here. Let me give you a hug. No Best Picture.
