Breakup: Anne Hathaway &
Raffaello Follieri
"I broke up with my boyfriend, and two weeks later he was sent to prison for
fraud. I mean, we've all been there, right, ladies?" That was Anne Hathaway on
"Saturday Night Live," finding the
funny in her June split from her con artist beau, Raffaello
Follieri, who was sentenced to four and a half years in the pokey after pleading
guilty to wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. During their four-year
romance, the actress unwittingly enjoyed the fruits of Follieri's ill-gotten
millions, including a $37,000-a-month New York apartment and a jewelry box
overflowing with sparklers, which the the FBI reportedly "recovered" from her after his
arrest. "It's a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a
sudden," Hathaway told October's W. "But just as suddenly, my friends threw
another rug back under me. I've been shown such kindness. Not everyone gets
that. A lot of people go through tough times alone." Anne, however, wasn't alone
for too long. In November, she was linked to little-known actor Adam Shulman, who
presumably underwent a thorough background check. Follieri, meanwhile, had some
trouble adjusting to his decidedly less luxurious surroundings. In a November
letter requesting a transfer to a different facility, he claimed his health had
suffered because of the prison's "unspeakably unsanitary" bathroom
conditions, bad food and "intolerable" stench.
