Synopsis: A remake of sorts of the 1935 western The Arizonian, this fine George O'Brien oater features Leon Ames as Sheriff Judd Cronan, a slick lawman running Mesa City as if he owns the place. When schoolmarm Virginia King (Virginia Vale) has had enough of both Cronan's capriciousness and his advances and decides to leave town, the sheriff arranges for his henchman Pete (Joe McGuinn) to commit a bit of kidnapping. Despite the accustomed solid performance by the always welcome George O'Brien, The Marshal of Mesa City belongs squarely to the supporting cast, Virginia Vale, Leon Ames and Henry Brandon. The latter especially seems to be enjoying a change of pace from the gothic characters he was usually asked to portray and his good-bad character actually seems ahead of its time.
