Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 4/16/2005A review of Windtalkers by ThePolishPrincessSpeak s I should have been fore-warned about this clunker two years ago when Larry King invited a WWII Navajo Windtalker, along with Nicholas Cage, to discuss his experiences and give his views about the movie. The Windtalker had nothing good to say about the movie other than the war scenes were realistic (i.e. blood, guts and bullets). But I rented it anyway thinking Nicholas Cage couldn't possibly be as arogant and opinionated as he appeared on Larry King... afterall his performance in Moonstruck was so sensitive and charming.
The movie Windtalkers unfortunatley was abysmal. It had all the the ingredients to be great or at the least interesting, but it could not escape the bad writing, the one dimensional characters and the Hollywood revisionist history. Normally a fine actor Nickolas Cage maintained a pained expression throughout the movie. I was hoping he would take a bullet early and end his misery. The movie tried to overcome these shortcomings by the endless killing of Japs and Yanks....oh the blood and guts. It was a shame to waste such a good cast in such a sorry war movie. It is very graphic, but war is graphic. Nick Cage is once again, my hero. He is an incredible actor - worthy of all awards. Was this review helpful? I enjoyed watching Cage do his thing and really work with the script to add good acting. I really do think this movie should be seen. Was this review helpful? And personally I think it's head and shoulders above "Tears Of The Sun" Was this review helpful? After seeing WWII potrayed in movies such as Saving Private Ryan, and The Thin Red Line, or even the HBO special, Band of Brothers, this movie just seems like corporate Hollywood crap. ";Hey lets make a war movie, let's get a big star, big director, and make a whole story centered around this pretentious plot."; The acting was terrible, costumes seemed fake, battle scenes and set designs just plain bad. Did anyone notice how evenly spaced all the holes from mortar shells were? And that grand finale, I thought they were on a tropical island, why did it seem like they just filmed it off in the angeles mountains or even palmdale? Just a waste of time. Was this review helpful? It has a wonderful cast, fulfilling each character to its full potential. The Navajos get the credit they deserved, and the war was shown in detail as it was as well. This is a MUST-SEE movie and I recommend this movie to anyone and everyone! Was this review helpful? If Cage dosen't win the Oscar, Hollywood is dead. Was this review helpful? I thought it should have centered more on the relationship with Cages' character and Adam Beaches' character. Mr Beach did a great job. The relationship between Cages character and the nurse was nothing. At the end of the movie I felt some images of real Codetalkers and their stories would have been a job well done.I feel sad when I think of how proud we Native Americans are our time we spent in service in the Armed Forces to a country that had done nothing but wanting to wipe us out or put us on reservations. However, I disliked the focus of the plot being soley on Nicolas Cage and not the actual story of the individual Navajos who risked and gave their lives for the code. I like Adam Beach, he is a very talented actor, but watching Windtalkers was more like watching an episode of the Lone Ranger and Adam Beach having to act out the part of Tonto. I'm what you would call a 'Post War Baby'. Both my parents were in WW11. My dad, Navy gunner on a ship/my mother, she was a luitenient (sp?) in the Airforce: and I'm not sure what she did. But my dad did see a lot of ";action"; while in the war. I watched and listened to war stories from my father while growing up. I've seen a lot of ";True"; movies. Either 1rst or 2nd WW, even the one that shouldn't have happened, Vietnam. Tonight I'm going to see 'Windtalkers'just after watching the 'trailer'on it. Looks like it would be well worth the $$ to me. Even if it is ";right before Christmas";. I'm not into gore or anything like that; but movies that are this realistic should be seen by more people if you were to ask me. Show the younger generation what there elders went through so that they could have the easiest life that they now possess. And take for granted. It really happened and it shouldn't be forgotten: ever! (and I'm female!) Was this review helpful? I was disappointed with this one however. The movie was entitled ";Windtalkers";. Where was the story regarding them? The Navajos were just a sideshow attraction; they should have been the feature attraction. The story was primarily about the white guy trying to reconcile a failed mission that caused the deaths of his comrades. And there were too many gory combat screens. I would have respected this more if the story was conveyed from the Navajos' perspective or with the primary emphasis on their experience. Was this review helpful? Don't see this movie if you have no respect for what people sacrificed back then. Only go to see it if you understand what real heros are, as represented in this film. Was this review helpful?
