This movie was rather thought provoking. Although I consider myself somewhat of a conservative, this documentary did raise some interesting questions about the way our society and our government function. I think the electric cars are a good alternative for those who can afford them and it fits their lifestyle, but I dont think that gas companies are in too serious danger of losing their market any time soon. Good movie if you are curious about alternative methods of transportation. ps to liberalrocker so youre saying an uninformed opinion is ok as long as it is in SUPPORT of whatever it is you dont know about?? just checking...

The completely electric car was never practical. Hybrids are considerably better, but we all know that a rechargable battery holds less power every time its charged as will cells in these cars. The driving range on electric cars can be said to be 1000 miles, but thats at optimum speed with no stops much like the EPA fuel milage estimates. A single company, like GM, cannot be singled out for destroying the future of the electric car. Its like hearing little kids trying to shift the blame and finally one says Well, he started it! GM probably destroyed them because they would lose money on them as the cells died and needed replacement while still under warranty. Name one company that would put something on the market fully knowing that the product will cost them much more than the initial profits. Had consumers shown great interest in electric cars and made it known that there is a large population wanting them, Im certain wed have millions on the road today. Much like hybrids, its obvious people want them but dont necessarily want to drive something as ugly as an Insight or Prius. This is why GM, DCX (DaimlerChrysler) and FoMoCo are all spending millions to create a hybrid version of every vehicle in their lineups. This is also why GM has been making all of its vehicles E85 ready for almost 7 years. Who killed the electric car? We did.

Have any of the people placing reviews seen the documentary? It seems that if you are a greenie basher that this documentary must be a farce. Regardless, it does seem odd that a company like GM which is in the profit making business would rather destroy a working vehicle that someone wanted to buy. Is there a viable market for plug-in electrics? Perhaps for strick commuters...But longer lasting batteries with 1000 mile ranges would make for a better deal. Although there is an argument that a plug-in car just moves the pollution from the streets to the power plant, the regulations for air pollution from a point source such as a power plant can be enforced more easily (as long as Bush does keep relaxing air quality regs). Additionally the type of pollution from gasoline vehicles and power plants are different. Phoenix AZ used to be a place where people with illness and allergy problems could come for relief. But now that its sprawling with highways and SUVs and a 30 mile commute is considered OK as long as you get a bigger house (that was built by unskilled workers), the air pollution is horrendous and is the cause of more allergies and respiratory problems. I know that I sound pretty greenie here but I dont have a hybrid. I drive a truck, but I do only live 8 miles from work and I carpool. Now maybe Ill go see this flick...then write a review that is useful.

Re Potentially complicit parties include automakers, oil companies and governments. Really. How original.

When I saw a 4-star review for a green documentary, I was immediately sceptical. When Mr. German described the box-office disaster An Inconvenient Truth as a hit, my skepticism was confirmed. Is this REALLY a four-star documentary? Or is it more like when grouped with other absurd, scientifically vapid, desperate attempts to save the flailing environmental movement, propoganda puff-pieces, this one at least has a couple of comedians?

Was it murder? Or was it natural selection simply weeding out a weakling unable to compete in our consumer world? Or was the electric car just ahead of its time? The documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? may not have the answer, but it makes for a lively, informative whodunit about an energy-efficient vehicle that debuted with fanfare and went out with a whimper.
