You really should not expect a lot from an adaptation of a movie, you'll definately find yourself dissappointed. More often than not, I always find myself enjoying the novel more than the movie. I thought this was a beautiful movie with a layers upon layers of dark underneath a pretty white package. Oleander is slow paced, but allows the average viewer to absorb every situation that Astrid is thrust into, a mother who is beautiful but like steel controlling her daughter's life while behind bars, and foster parent (usually mothers in this movie) with a seemingly perfect exterior become either sadder or more devious as time passes. Deep, powerful, important, beautiful - this movie is all of these things and so much more. I have seen this movie many times, own it on DVD, and have read the book, and the character realism and incredible performances from some of the most powerful actors out there (Renee Zellweger, Michelle Pfeiffer) and one amazingly talented newcomer (Alison Lohman) always astound me. This is why movies are made. I love this movie. The characters are fascinating, their portrayals unflinchingly honest. . . It's so deep and poignant, it's power stays with you. See this movie. You won't regret it. Was this review helpful? I bawled through the whole movie the first time i saw it ( luckily i was at home). This movie is by far worth seeing Astrids overprotection by Ingrid is far too extreame and is easy to relate to. How Astrid copes with her life; sexual abuse by her "father" figure, suicide of a stepmother who was offering eternal love all because of her mother, falling in love with a sweet guy then losing him and leaving him, and lets just say the last bunch she lived with; is unbelievably normal and horrifying. She seems to eat herself up inside. This movie was just what anyone needs to make ur life feel easier and to get you to cry. Was this review helpful? It showed things that real people could actually be going through right now, instead of movies that are so unbelievably fake! I thought it was awesome and would definetly give it 2 THUMBS UP!!!! It makes you think about others in Astrids situation, and also people can relate to it too. I like it a lot and i would definately see it again. Was this review helpful? If you are looking to be uplifted, this is not a feel good movie. I have to admit that both my 89 year old Mom and I turned if off the VCR about half way through. We've watched plenty of sad movies before. This one didn't seem to have any end to its gloom. Was this review helpful? It may be a chick flick in some way, but it still was entertaining. The performances were great by all the women in the film. It was also a good story and a conventional plot. The one redeeming element is Michelle Phifer. Phifer's performance was true to the mother's character which is ambiguous at best and hateful in a deeper sense. Renee Zellweger and Robin Wright-Penn both gave respectable performances as the trailer trash, recovering drug addict foster mother and the vulnerable upper class foster mother, but neither seemed to let go of their larger personas for me. This story is just short of brutal and certainly heartbreaking and yet there is just enough hope and/or suspense to keep going with it. With the book and the movie I felt like I had been emotionally spent at the end, but was left with a lot to think about. After the movie, I exited the theater thinking that Michelle Phifer would surely be nominated for an Academy Award. I was very sad to see that she wasn't recognized for this outstanding performance. White Oleander truly defines the emotional issues of a Daughter's feelings when her mother sets a bad example. Ingrid, mother of Astrid, tries to persuade Astrid into believing that wrong WAS right. While Astrid struggles to find her true self, she tries to find the trust in her mother that was left behind. Astrid travels to many different foster homes including Very different kinds of people and different and difficult situations. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
