Though movies are almost always shadows of their literary birthplace, I thought the movie carried a powerful message for young and old alike. I was somewhat dismayed by some of the other ratings below, but I understand that imagination gives rise to a plethora of notions, imaginary places, and fanciful friends. And, because of this, someone else's vision will never measure up in any art form. Well worth the time to see, even if you are cynic! Was this review helpful? I took all of the the monsters to be the repetitive thoughts that all human beings live with unfortunately that usually take on a life of their own and become facets of our personality...anyway, I understood the message to be one of making peace with ourselves, rather making war within in our minds and then acting out on it.... Plus, I thought the monsters expressive faces conveyed a lot of emotion so it was easy to connect... Was this review helpful? I loved the creatures and I'm thinking the movie message was one of family. It was weird and did not make much sense to us. Except that each creature had a personality like one of our "family" might. Maybe that was it... from a childs eye. Unpredictable adults in a scary world. Life Was this review helpful? It was dull dull dull!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/9/2009A review of Where the Wild Things Are by Grandma200 Bought the book for my granddaughter. Nothing there! Took my 7 and 10 year old granddaughters to see the movie. None of us enjoyed it. It was a waste of time and money. Was this review helpful? I enjoyed reading it to all three of my children and saw it as nothing more than the dream of a mischievous little boy named Max. My daughter and I were very excited when the movie trailer came out and couldn't wait to go see it. However, what was a children's book with a children's story has been turned into a story about abuse that is filled with violence. After the movie was over my daughter and I sat there for at least 5 minutes feeling like we had been slam dunked a couple dozen times. My advice. Read the book, enjoy the book. DON'T go see the movie. It leaves you feeling nothing but bad. Was this review helpful? If the book was any good at all the movie has destroyed it. If you like the book dont watch the movie. If you havent read the book .... read it first... then dont watch the movie. It isnt like the book is better than the movie... its more like this movie is horrible. Was this review helpful? We left before the ending because of the violance. The movie trailer does not represent the show. Was this review helpful? I hoped for a well crafted family story with all of Maurice Sendak's meaning and wit. The film started out strangely and slowly, and did not establish the story's main character as anyone the audience would actually favor. Beyond that point, the film just combined an old neighborhood character dialogue style with flashes of HR Pufnstuf or a scary version of the Banana Splits. The 1960's weirdness was also noticeable. Still boring, though! I stuck with the entire film out of respect for Spike Jonze but it was clear to the meager audience that "Where the Wild Things Are" is either too personal a topic for the director or this is a clear sign of decline. Either way, this was just too dull, slow and weird. Stick with the book, not even worth a rental. Was this review helpful? I kept looking over at him thinking it was too scary for him. He was very in to it, I on the other hand wasn't impressed. Was this review helpful? We all read and remembered the book of our childhood. I am old enough to remember when the book came out. I wonder what book they read to create this movie! It was troubling and lacked the magic of childhood and the book created and illustrated. One might say that “many experience the childhood of Max” and thereby was fitting. That is why it was created the way it was. I do not know many that want to relive painful events in our lives. It could have been like the Polar Express. That movie was filled with wonder, childhood fantasy, make-believe and fun. This movie is not worth the cost of a rental. We wasted our time and money. I wished we could get it all back. This is a very expensive, overly complex, overdone attempt to portray a well-loved children's book. It trashed the book by trying to make it more than it was!! The book was wonderful in its simplicity and example of a child coping with his anger, using his imagination & creativity. The movie was messy in its message & delivery, incomprehensible to these (college educated) parents, as well as to our 5 & 11 yr old children. The child actor was excellent. The rest was NOT. The book drew us in to see the movie, the movie left us wanting to forget there ever was the book.....Authors beware!! Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
