It has amazing musical sequences and the chemistry between Tony and Maria is superb. This movie has impacted many other successful movies and it truly is a movie that you will never forget. The sad ending sticks in your mind for a long time. This is truly a brilliant piece of cinema, and I reccomend it highly. Was this review helpful? The dancing and singing was pointless and just plain stupid. It had nothing to do with the story. And thats not all, its based on Romeo and Juliet so I already knew what was going to happen. It’s loud and crass, the characters are slimy and livid, the romance is graphic, and the dance sequences are so off-the-wall physical that any stuff-shirt twit will faint in their seat. Ah, but that is joy of ‘WSS.’ It is an urban musical, taking place not in glamorous ballrooms or posh hostels, but out in the streets, in back alleys, and in the dark corners of dank old urbanism. It peels back the sun-ripe happy American exterior and exposes the hard-edged racist underground. Some might lament the manner in which this subject matter receives its treatment-with Puerto Ricans and white boys staging well-choreographed (and I do mean well-choreographed, hats off to Jerome Robbins on that one) urban brawls. But to those of you who may follow this opinion, I say look deeper. This is a film about racial intolerance, and for 1961 Hollywood, it was amazingly frank. Then, by combining two universally familiar elements-a Romeo and Juliet-based screenplay, and the musical genre-it becomes accessible to everyone. And it should be seen by everyone; if not for the story but for it’s rapturous illustration of the dance. And the story rolls on… Was this review helpful? After all, it won "Best Picture" at the Oscars, "Best Supporting Actress", "Best Supporting Actor" and more! Great music and acting that will leave you mezmorized! Its story stands the test of time. I have probably seen every musical made into a movie and this is one of the best. The actors are fantastic and the songs and dance scenes are wonderful.
