Volver is a tragically, comical, happy, sad, lively and funny movie about a Spanish family. Two sisters have lost their mother in a supposedly tragic accidental fire. Their close friend who is dying of cancer supposedly lost her mother at the same time. However, she has inkling that her mother might be alive. She thinks the ghost knows where her mother is. She wants one of the sisters to ask her ghost mother what she knows of her missing mom. The ghost of the two sisters mother has been known to appear to one of the sisters. The mother who is supposedly, a ghost coming from the dead to ask for forgiveness from the one daughter who does not believe in ghosts and whom she herself has a teenage daughter knows more than anybody thinks. She knows what happened to the mother of the cancer stricken daughter. The teenage daughter kills the man whom she thinks is her father, but dies by her hand when he tried to abuse her. Her mother is shocked to say the least when she finds out what took place, but even though the crime is justifiable, she decides not to tell the authorities. Both hide the mans body. They claim to the rest of the neighbors that he has abandoned them forever. They claim to everyone that he will never come back. Most, if not all, scenes are comical and funny even though tragedy, suspense and above all surprises are always around the corner. After the entire puzzle is sorted out, the viewer will definitely be surprised and the ending leaves one with the satisfaction of considering the movie as being lively in every aspect and time. Penelope Cruz did a fantastic job in acting in this movie, much better than how she does on movies directed by American directors. Volver is such a lively movie that it is worth seeing twice.

This movie is excellent in all sense. Penelope Cruz shows the great actress she is, moving in a more familiar element a Spanish theme in her native Spanish language. She is deep, and funny at the same time. All the actors have been great even those smaller roles like the Cuban illegal prostitute portrait by Maria Isabel Diaz, with a touch of Carribbean accent and fun. The movie flows and the story keeps interesting and involving from the begining to the ending credits. It has very dramatic and suspense scenes, a lot of hillarious moments, and a wonderful familiar drama where a woman (Cruz) has to deal with a murder, protecting her daughter, caring for an ill aunt, grieving her death parents, and taking care of her life while keeping an optimistic approach. Almodovar, Cruz and Volver are sure contenders when the Academy nominations will be announced

Volver opens with a marvelous scene reflecting that fixation on the hereafter as dozens of women dust and scrub the graves of loved ones while some find comfort tending their own future resting places. Among them are sisters Raimunda (Cruz) and Sole (Lola Duenas), who are back from Madrid to their provincial hometown to visit their ailing aunt (Chus Lampreave) and tidy up the graves of their parents, killed in a fire. This may be the role of a lifetime for Cruz, who is a superb mix of fragility and fortitude. Cruzs magnificent performance seamlessly ranges from maternal steeliness to childlike delicacy, and she looks rapturously beautiful no matter what mode shes in. Maura who worked with Almodóvar on half a dozen past films, most notably Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown deftly mixes pathos, regret and humor in presenting a mother with a good deal of unfinished business among her kin. Duenas, whose credits include The Sea Inside, is lovably hilarious as the sibling accustomed to being the wallflower beside her luminous sister, while Portillos sober Agustina brings a hard, sad gravitas that contrasts with the lightness and lunacy of Raimundas family. Volver meanders a bit toward the end, particularly with a trash-TV talk-show sequence involving Agustinas search for her mother, the scene sticking out awkwardly as the main story of Raimunda and her family is wrapping up. Still, its a tiny flaw in an otherwise vibrant film thats pure class, pure imagination and pure Almodovar.

I saw the movie few months ago in Barcelona, Spain, I will not be surprised for the Spain nomination as the best foreign film, and who knows? Almodovar as best director!

This is already out in France and if your into small movies with big characters as this Director does, once again he hits the target. Moving, funny and best of all smart. If your a 1 cel person into Adam Sandler crap, pass on this your too common.
