Maurice (Peter O'Toole), although aging and ill himself, hasn't lost the sensitivity which gradually transforms the anger and profound depression of the rustic, uneducated young woman who comes to act as caretaker to his best friend. He brings her back from a ruinous state of emotional crisis to a place where she has finally found the beginnings of self-respect and independence. He does it deftly, gently and cleverly; without condescension and without patronizing.
The amazing achievement of both O'toole and Jodi Whittaker is due to their shared abilities to realistically convey the deep connection they develop over the course of their short relationship. Although the difference in their character's ages and experience was always significant, they made it nearly irrelevant. Every nuance of words and gestures were so finely played that this highly unusual story was entirely believable.
This is one of those rare films where the artistry of the players was breathtaking. Peter O'Toole is magical. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-1 of 1 Per Page | ||
