i might just be too uncultured to fully appreciate this movie, but i really cannot comprehend how anyone could like it. the trailer made it look so colorful and so interesting, which is what trailers are supposed to do and all, but the movie was a complete let down! i couldnt even watch the whole movie! maybe it was just the story that i couldnt understand, but i must say this was one of the worst ive ever seen... probably only for those people who can stand this genre of films

I confess I'm not a reader, so I don't know the brilliance of Thackery. As a result, I had to watch it twice to catch the storyline. It was kinda confusing to me, but I got it after the second viewing with the help of subtitles in English and freeze frames. I bought the DVD only because my favorite actress is in it, the one and only, Reese Witherspoon. And BOY! Did she ACT in it! It was good to see Reese in a different venue along with the fabulous costumes and scenery! I wish they showed more of INDIA as the people and colourful decorations are a definite turn-on. Her makeup was ridiculous in her dance though, as was the choreography. The only thing I sensed lacking was Reese's borderline English accent. It was O.K. but not convincing, even as in her other movie, "The Importance Of Being Earnest". Still, she pulled it off in a way which did not affect her performance. She was simply brilliant as the critics say. She is maturing as an actress and THAT'S what's important. Way to go Reese!!

I rented this movie, thinking it would be a very enjoyable watch. I was dispappointed. I usually love movies set in this time period, and there were some good points like the sets, costumes, and actors, but the storyline and plot were very disappointing. I did not like how the movie played out and had hoped for something better seeing as it had potential to be a really great movie.

This movie is great to look at. The set is great and the costumes are good. The acting is also very good except for the lead actress who was ok... she did not make the role her own and was not very believable. It did not appear as though Ms. Witherspoon knew what to do with the role. The movie is fine for the first half and with the lead actress falls apart in the second half. The ending is very weak, predicable and silly. By the end of the movie the viewer does not really care what happends to the lead character... you are ready to leave. The recent A&E adaption of Vanity Fair is a superior production. I am not even sure if I would recommend this on video. I am a big fan of the various Jane Austen adaptations on A&E and I did not like this movie.

I saw the movie and wish I hadn't. The acting was good, but the movie was slow moving, boring and pointless. It was hard to follow. The best part was the end. If there was a morale to the story, I certainly didn't get it. I did not read the book. Hopefully, it was better than the movie.

A marvelous adaptation. Reese Witherspoon is at her best. The inclusion of people of colour was brilliand and effective. Anyone who doesn't like this movie just didn't delve deep enough. Believe me, if you want to see a GOOD period film, SEE THIS MOVIE!

Findly a real movie without any false camera fast action.Beautiful comtumes to fit reality in old elegance renewed. No switching cameras to make you think they were bad actors just down to earth good dialog and interplay like it use to be. No jumpy cameras to give you a headache or to make you look away like people have had to do with Spiderman or Bourne Supremacy.....excellent good movie stuff, romance and heartache at its finest. Good job

I will go out on a limb and pretty much guarantee that there isn't any minorities in this film (who in the hell could blame them even if they could have been in this waste of film). Its difficult to even see Reese in her promo due to that big ass fore head that she possesses. To me its just another bland "white" uppidy-posh flick or better yet...a triflin rendition of "Clueless" all over again.

This was an excellent adaptaion of Thackery's novel. Great screenplay, acting, costumes, set design, etc. I especially liked Reese Witherspoon's English accent. Mira Nair made a beautiful film. I liked her "Moonsoon Wedding" as well.

We enjoyed this movie very much. We didn't expect the movie to be exactly like the book, who can? Academy Award winning Cold Mountain differed from the book as well- but was enjoyable and entertaining. Same holds true for Vanity Fair. Reese Witherspoon did a fabulous job and did not seem pregnant per the costuming. I usually read these comments before I attend the movie, in this case it was after, which was good due to the numerous negative reviews posted from the same person!! Overall good movie, some cheesy parts (i.e.. India scenes), but we would recommend this movie to friends and family.

I have just seen the trailer to this movie and I have to say that it looks alright but I do have to say that the costumes do not match the time period. I highly doubt any of the writers even read the book. It is also stupid that they couldn't write in a pregnancy and for those of you who don't know, Reese is pregnant with her second child in this movie. I see no reason why they couldn't get a British actor to play Becky Sharp.
