I didn't know what to expect from this film, but I was pleasantly surprised. Most period dramas are one of three classes, to me. The first is a total lack of knowledge about the period, and the second is a smattering of anachronism, but the third is absolutely comfortable with the era...and that's what this picture has as well as everything else. I usually don't like Tom Cruise, but he was great in this one. I think this would be a great film for those who don't know very much about this period.

I thought that the movie Valkyrie had a great story line, however, I felt that the movie dragged a tad bit, and the action i expected to see just wasn't there. Another thing i didnt like about this film was that i knew what was going to happen, knowing that "*($@&*" was going to live and knowing the operation was going to fail, kind of ruined the movie for me. All and all i would give this movie maybe 2 and a half stars.

Posted: 1/23/2009A review of Valkyrie by Mutt1001
I once took a film course and the instructor had said that often critics become overwhelmed with the number of movies they see, often leading them to overrate some crappy movies and underrate some good movies. This was a good movie, no one I know has said anything bad about the moive itself (although a few 'despite Tom Cruise' comments are in their opinions). Giving it zero is more of an 'I hate Tom Cruise' statement than an actual movie review. Shame on MSN for such a review.

It was a good story and Tom did a great job. Worth renting at least. BUT... ALL OF THE ACTOR (except Tom) WERE ENGLISH!!!! They all spoke with ENGLISH accents. They didn't even try. Its kind of hard to believe a movie about ^*#$'s played with ALL ENGLISH ACTORS!!! Did the world run out of Germans?! Does anyone see the irony in this?! You'd think someone in Hollywood would have watched this and said, "Hey, wait a minute..." Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez

This was a remarkably good movie. Excellent script, sensitive directing and engrossing cinematography that immerses you in to the atmosphere and action of that era. The acting was superb. Including Tom Cruse’s characterization of Colonel Stauffenber. Critics hate Tom, not because of this bad acting but because they are mercenaries of big studios to whom Tom refuses to stoop. Especially, in the last 10 years we are reading uncouth gibberish from 3rd rate want-to-be critics, who have no opinion of their own but simply write what they are told to write. Their ability to understand art is just as questionable as their grammar. They could not stomach Tom’s “The last Samurai” which should have want many prizes and joined the studios in assassinating the attributes of that great movie; only to displease Tom. They did the same thing with Denzel Washington’s Depiction of Frank Lucas; just to short cut his chances for an Oscar nomination. They said Denzel sweetned Frank. If Frank had not be the slick smooth operator that Denzel showed him to be he would not have been able to manage the deals he struck with the Italian mobs and the military operatives in Vietnam.

I liked much more than I thought considering I thought I knew how it ended. I appreicated how the movie brought about information about how many assasination attempts really happened and that there was an opposing force. HOwever, the movie did a below average job of introducing charactors as if it assumed the viewer could fill in the blanks, like about the monster *($@&* was, why people were so loyal to the furor, and there was no charactors I was passionately for or against...so I say the story is strong, but simply told a story. I did not feel involved as really good movies can make me feel and develope a personal stake in how one lives or dies. While it was a good movie, it did not get me involved.

For those who likes historical accuracy, and good cinematic tension you should enjoy. Some of the best actors of are times are in it. Not however the breath catching movie the ads produce. Worth seeing, but save little money go to afternoon showing.

For all the historical accuracy, and good cinematic tension, Tom Cruise kills this movie. Cruise is the same character from Mission Impossible, only dressed in a German uniform. Cruise neither looks, moves, or behaves like an army colonel. Cruise distracted from the movie and all I saw was an actor playing a character, not the character himself.

We went to this movie because our friend, who has a master's degree in military history, wanted to see what a mess was made of the story. I figured on two hours of boredom or worse. We all ended up liking the movie a lot. According to both our friend and another history buff, it was extremely accurate. None of us are Tom Cruise groupies, but were pleased by his performance and the performance of others in the movies, such as Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, and Kenneth Brannagh. Even though one knows how the movie ends, the script kept one on edge, waiting for the plot to be discovered. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the politics of World War II rather than in watching a shoot-em-up, special effects fest.

I read the review written in the Christmas Day edition of the newspaper just before going to see the movie. As a history buff, I enjoyed all of the details involved & the lack of "special effects", bad language & bedroom scenes. If the reviewer did not like documentaries or WWII movies, he had no business reviewing the film as he was biased to begin with. I did not go to the movie to be critical of Tom Cruise, one way or the other, but to seek more information on a few brave souls. We all should learn some lessons from them...

I was pleasantly suprised by this movie after reading the rather negative AP review. The beginning of the movie transitions from a German-language monologue into Cruise speaking english, which was enough to convey the idea "This is a german movie that is being shot in english." After that I didn't worry one bit about the accents of the characters. I found the story informative. The scenes were shot in a suspenseful way that was not overly dramatic, which I felt was consistent with the very true-to-life event portrayal that the director sought for. I would classify this movie as more docudrama then action/adventure, but that didn't stop me from appreciating the telling of this bit of history. Viewers looking for a to good to be true action hero story (which I enjoy) will not find it in "Valkyrie." However, for a true-to-life and historically insightful tale told at an intriguing pace, this movie is an excellent pick.

I enjoyed it. The scenery, costumes, and actors were all brilliant. Here's the spoiler: We all know *$#^!@ commits suicide nine months after the end of the story. Sorry, folks. Read your history.

Boring. You have to like world war 11 movies. And you already know the ending so it was a little disappointing. As far as Tom Cruise goes. Well he never lets you lose site that he is tom cruise. I felt more like i was watching tom cruise than the character he was playing. Tom Cruise was better in Tropic Thunder. Ha!!!
