Denzel gives a good performance of a vice cop who slid over the edge and justifies to himself that he really didn't. Ethan Hawke who plays the rookie who just wants to make good manages a convincing portrayal of innocence and belief in the good will of men. Like piano keys, they go well together. It's a little extreme but the ending justifies the means. A good flick, but not one you watch with the kids. Definitely a movie for guys or if you are feeling rowdy. Was this review helpful? This is something that most audiences would ask themselves after watching this one. This film is obviously one of Denzel Washington's most trivial and yet controversial performances. An excellent street-smart cop and a controversial undercover NARC on the take. This is the first look at Denzel in a ";bad guy"; role. To some, this is scary. To others, this is a must-see, and must-own film. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 3/31/2003A review of Training Day by Anonymous Great movie! Denzel Washington was totally out of his traditional character. His acting was suberb. The movie had an ending that showed bad things come to bad people. It didn't glorify the bad in the man. Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 3/8/2003A review of Training Day by HappyPhantomDude As a police officer, this was the most unrealistic cop movie I have ever seen. I usually try to keep an open mind and just enjoy cop movies for their entertainment value alone, but this movie's realism (or lack thereof) was so distracting that I found myself groaning on several occasions. Denzel was, of course, predictably good, but his performance was not enough to save this movie for me. Some movies don't have to be realistic to be good, but this one did and it wasn't. This would have been a MUCH better movie if they would have paid more attention to their technical advisors and less towards ";audience appeal"; factors. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/23/2003A review of Training Day by mole_enium The movie stays suspense full and the plot is not revealed right at the beginning. In the begining Alonzo seems like a great cop. On the tape has an extra scene rite after Jake gets to his house that also makes me wonder whether Alonzo was really bad or he was trained to be like that. Was this review helpful? The way he keeps the audience asking the question whether what he is doing is justifiable is flawless and he's so good at it that for moments in the movie you're actually rooting for the bad guy! Ethan hawk also does hinself justice, he could have so easily been overshadowed by Denziel but he manages to hold his own with a great performance. I have to highlight the scene in which Denziel's charachter finally finds out he is not king of the streets anymore which results in a hilarious but pulsating performance. Was this review helpful? I'm a huge movie-goer and I was suprised to find myself extremely captured, moved, and impressed with the whole film. This is the only movie where i like watching EVERY scene of the movie. Some of the lines said are quite creative...and u can't forget about Denzel. WOW. What an incredible, phenomenal actor. His performance just blows u away. Ethan Hawke was amazing as well. And I gotta give props to the director for his intelligence and creativity. Also, the ending for this movie is the most suprising. I was stunned. TRUST ME! This movie is a must see! It soon unfolds into an operation to cover up a lead narcotics officer's Vegas mistake. It has a great twist of crime, questions, and surprise. This great film is complimented by a great soundtrack. Not because he is such a physically attractive man (that helps) but because he has really been gifted with a talent....acting and he has been blessed with very good movie scripts. He really can act and I have seen every movie he has been in. And I really enjoyed Training Day....just the opposite of his usual roles. His son really advised him correctly on this one....I read that he advised him to take the part. He is sexier as a bad guy, if that is possible.I am a really big Denzel fan and I do enjoy his work.
