Interesting thriller in which Welles is able to again experiment cinematically with the similar freedoms afforded him in 'Kane'. Inspector Miguel Vargas has his Mexican honeymoon abruptly interrupted at the border by a brutal murder of a known official. He proceeds to become *$#^ed in to a little clique of corruption and drugs existing in neighboring border towns between Police Captain Hank Quinlan and a family trafficking narcotics through their locally operated gin mills. As he probes into the investigation he discovers a solid web of deceit as plans are made to frame him in the same fashion of Quinlan's other cases. Because of their great angst to obtain the services of Heston, Uni kow-towed to his suggestion of Welles as the Director. In his own way, Heston attained vindication for Orson after his very obtuse estrangement from RKO and Welles was again given the creative reigns which produced in retrospect, some very skillfull editing, a good ensemble culled from the Mercury players, and a fantastic opening shot which in one take, has never been successfully attempted since. This piece also contains one of Dennis Weaver's finest film performances to date.
