Above the hunting feeling of singularity and the loss of human expression, I remember feeling so alone with the main characters. The recent movie "The Island" comes close to a remake of this classic. In particular the futuristic car chase scene, thx, borught one of the best" edge of your seat "chases to the big screen, next to "Bullitt" and "Grand Prix".

Expanded plot and scrutinous character development are advantages gained in this project spawned from Lucas's notorious Senior Project. Although we're never given time-frame or civilization reference, we're shown a society arrested through high technology by a ";tour guide"; named THX 1138 (";Thex";) who finds that his homogenized and severely regulated existence is in conflict with instinctive biological drives although he cannot pinpoint his discomfort any more than his synthetic father-confessor-diety can. His mate LUH, also shares his anguish while a close associate in Computer Control tries manipulating their existence to meet his own selfish ends. 1138 eventually reaches a point in isolation when he finally decides to escape his sterile lifestyle in favor of crossing forbidden boundaries to see what lies beyond. Thanks to Coppola's insistence that Lucas be more intense in scriptwriting, we are given a more comprehensive view of what he may have obscured in his first effort. This will probably go down as one of Robert Duvall's career best to date; but to all intents and purposes, it is an acquired taste at best.
