Do yourself a favor and rent it through your library system or however you get your hands on older films. The new version with Meg Ryan is enjoyable enough but is weighed down with the writers, producers or directors trying to modernize the story. It is a weak version but it could have been better if they stuck to a simplier story. It comes across as a made for TV movie instead of a large movie release. Was this review helpful? We all felt it was worth the trip!
What a great realalistic movie. Didn't realize until afterward that there was not even one male in the whole movie. (Atleast none of us saw any male actors.)
We all laughed, booed, and screamed at the movie.
I think it will sell big on the DVD market. I know I'll buy it! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful I agree with so many of the reviews!!!! Save your money....what a shame...with all the wonderful actresses in the film..thats what drew me...such talent...what a waste of a a potential awesome chick flick. The story was terrible, boring and just very disappointing...my friends and I went out for girls nite and we all felt the same way..thumbs down....what a bummer Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful I went with my daughter and some friends and we had a great time. No drama and no worries for the evening. What a cute and funny movie. No deep meanings or heavy plots lines just a time to laugh and enjoy the junk food at the snack bar and pretending the calories don't count at the movies. I loved everyone in the movie and they were all perfect for their role. I especially loved the fact that none of them are making the news using their celebrity status for political platforms. I just hate that. The funniest part of the movie was the baby delivery scene that was total hysteria. Sure something like that wouldn't really happen or even be tolerated at a hospital but big deal, it's a movie and make believe. That's what makes things so funny. I'm going again with the few ladies that weren't able to see it yet and I'm looking forward to getting another unserious and refreshing funny couple of hours with the ladies. Was this review helpful? And the script was weaker as well - could have been more. It was a great idea this remake, but most of the actors were not cast well in their roles. The chemistry was flawed, the relationships not credible - I couldn't even see these women being friends, and how exactly did that happen? Here's how I would have cast it - Jean Tripplehorn or Rachel Weisz replacing Meg Ryan, Marcia Gay Harden or Helen Hunt replacing Annette Bening, Camryn Manheim or Kristen Johnston in Debra Messing's role and I would leave Jada Pinkett Smith and Eva Mendes in their roles - they were the only roles that seemed to fit the characters.
That being said, I still enjoyed watching these women play out their roles - not because I liked the roles, but because I liked them - so, all in all it was worth seeing, but I think it's simply worth waiting for the movie to come to Netflix. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful one of the WORST movies I've seen in a long time. Boring, with all the star talent I expected a LOT more, and this film just did not deliver. It was overly stereotypical, definitley unbelievable, and just plain old ridiculous. Fine cast of characters but whoever wrote or directed this film had no idea what on earth to do with all the talent they had on set. Way too predicatble and just terrible. I love Candice Bergen and Bette Midler, but even these two stars in the sky couldn't save this movie. The glaringl absence of even ONE male figure was also unrealistic and basically kind of scary to tell the truth. Don't waste your time or you money, not even when it comes to DVD or cable!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/15/2008A review of The Women by greyfox111 I couldn't wait to see this movie. Once I got there, I couldn't believe the extent of the misuse of all that talent. It played like a thirty minute sitcom. Every time a point of substance came up, it was dropped. I expected so much more from this cast of heavy hitters. If you're not into plot development, then you will enjoy the film. If, like me, you look for depth and meaning even when the film is a comedy, don't waste your money. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful I am still shaking my head, all of the star power in this movie and it was still just awful! The dialog was so rushed that the fact they were “acting” jumped out and slapped you. Cloris Leachman and Debra Messing were the ONLY reason I didn’t walk out of the movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 9/13/2008A review of The Women by Motherjoy4 It was so much better than I thought it would be. A great cast of characters wih some of today's top female actors. If you want to go see an enjoyable movie with your girlfriends, this is it. I would recommend it to other women. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Me being a Male, The Women still brought some funny moments. It reminded me of Desperate Housewives. Meg Ryan played an outstanding part as well as Annette Benning and Bette Midler. Overall a good movie to see when you have nothing to do. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Three generations of women in my family just got back from this movie and we had a blast. It was non-stop funny and touching and thoughtful. It was a wonderful movie about friendship and personal growth. We all LOVED this movie and will definetely buy it when it comes out on DVD. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful I am not going to tell you there is any deep meaning to this movie but the chemistry these amazing actresses were able to create throughout the movie was brought to a hilarious peak at the end. It was laugh out loud for the primarily female audience. Every one in the room was relating and enjoying. I am still smiling! It is an absolutely fabulous Chick Flick! Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 5 users found this helpful I can't even begin to start about how disgusted I am. If ANYONE has seen the 1939 version of this movie, how could you even stomach to sit through this. I mean, Hollywood "tried" to re-create the magic between Ms. Crawford and Ms. Shearer when the paired Joan Collins in a later version, but I thought it lacked the finesse of the first film. And NOW they have turned this wonderful classic film about women into something trashy. The whole idea of this movie is about how women love, treat and react to each other. NOT about careers, lesbians and the like. (don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes but that was never the premise behind that movie.) I love each one of these actresses but it boggles the mind to understand how and WHY they were even chosen for these parts. It just goes to show that there are no really good actresses in Hollywood anymore and that they are just putting anyone on the screen for foolishness. If you really want to see what this movie was about, then go to Turner Classic Movies and buy it or look to see when the original version comes on. This movie is no comparison and it is a disgrace to the legacy that was left by the original cast. I wouldn't go see this if my life depended on it. Was this review helpful?
