I can't believe that its been 70 years since Wizard of Oz was released and I can't wait to add the movie to my DVD Collection. My grandma has this movie and I keep borrowing the movie, but I want my own. This movie is a great movie that the whole family would love and can't wait for my kid's to watch the movie. Of course you can now watch it on DVD and the same excitement is there. There are not many movies that trail a childhood, but this movie is one of them. My children love this movie. And I know that my grandchildren will love it too. So after almost 70 years, I dont think there will be another movie for the entire family that will excede the memories like this one. Dorothy Gale is a child of innocence who, we discover, goes through peril and danger in a journey to her "self discovery". The magical character she learns that from, is a fictitious Wizard.
As we meet her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, the only Family Dorothy has come to know, we also draw closer to Henry's hired workers. The three companions are Dorothy's educators and teach her important lessons about the town folk. The tests of trouble and danger come in the form of a twister, when her relatives cannot help her. During this period,Dorothy is knocked unconcious and enters Dreamland.
We see the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion as being shelters and shields of Dorothy's Protection: They help her discover her own strength.
In the World, all children go through situations, to reach the process of Maturity. Dorothy faces her fears and along the road to her discovery, she gains what these three build in her own life: The Scarecrow's Knowledge, the Tin Man's Wisdom, and even the Lion's desired "Nerve" (his own Courage).
I am 40 years old and still enjoy this classic tale. The film adaptaion we know as "the Wiz", takes similarities from Baum's moralistic story. Diana Ross,Michael Jackson, and Nipsey Russell go through a very similar travel to a "Wizard" character. Was this review helpful? I remember watching this as a little girl and now that I am a grandmother, I can still share this classic with my grandchildren and they are still able to enjoy the way that I did all those years ago. Every character is an icon and every song is a memory. I'm a 47 year old Dad and love to watch that movie on DVD with my family as much as I watched it as a little boy on a small TV.
It reminds me of the Fall and all the sacred holidays that follow. In a world full of issues and problems, I become a child once again and enter Emerald City. I cherish this movie and thank Judy for her role in American history.
Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/23/2004A review of The Wizard of Oz by Anonymous This movie was the FIRST movie AND musical I viewed on TV as a child -- and I've watched it EVERY YEAR without fail until I received my own copy for a birthday present. The acting, the costuming, the sweet story, the music,... this is what muscicals are about. My children grew up with the Wizard also and my daughter have enjoyed a life of muscials as a result. One of my daughters has gone on to acting herself and has a part-time role on "All My Children." What she does for a living isn't as important as looking back on her young life and watching the eyes of my young children light up when the Wizard would show on TV annually. They, like me, never minded knowing what was to happen... but enjoyed every moment. Every year my girls give me Wizard memorabilia for Xmas and with each gift, I'm reminded of the innocense of childhood and the songs that still play in my head... "... when all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around..." :-) Was this review helpful?
