Well First of all, it does not have really a main point..like in the begining this pirate rat is traveling with a pirate of somewhat, nex they go to this place were its like national soup month or something for the people of the castle, then the queen of this land dies because when there surving her soup she sees the rat that was traveling with the pirate in her soup, so then they ban soup day forever then this mouce which i think is the main character Despereux is born withlarge ears which doesnt even matter cause thats just a feature or something, then he goes to mouse school where the teach him how to be scared and stuff but hes not so then they send hin to another worl that is in ratworld were all the rats are, while this is happening Despereaux goes to the castle to see te princeses of the queen who died but she wants it to rain i think and she wants to have soup day again and she wants a prince charming (i know greedy right) but she meets the mouse and aperently they fall in love i guess but all while this is going on the princeses assistant wants to become a princess lets just say that she gets into trouble
..and you know what there is just to many things going on i couldnt keep up..im sorry but just dont waste your time
lets just say in the end Despereaux can fly?! i know im still in shock from this movie Was this review helpful? We've never read the book, had no pre-conceived ideas of what it should be, and found this to be an excellent movie. It is not action packed as it is a fairytale - not an action advenure movie. More along the lines of Cinderella than The Incredibles. The art work is beautiful. We went with her 11 year old friend who also loved it. These are two sensitive girls that cried and had to leave at March of the Penguins so G rated non violence works great. Though there were a few tense moments. Was this review helpful? Not after much thought she answered "The popcorn, but it's ok I really don't like mice anyways." I liked the popcorn better as well. Was this review helpful? But the acting and production values of this film really outshine the mediocre script. I have read the book to my children who absolutely loved it (ages 6 & 8). The story in the movie is really a mixed bag. Never does it rise to level that the characters or the star studded cast deserve. It really is nothing like the book from the opening. There are no ships in the book nor does the town have a soup theme! I could go on but truly the script never reconcilles itself with the wit and cleverness in which the story is told in the book. This movie is certainly not a classic and does not come close to five stars. So take your kids to see it as there are few good family options at the theaters right now. But beware if you have read them the book they may come out dissapointed like my kids and I did. Was this review helpful? While it strayed from the original tale a bit, it remained true to the story Ms. DiCamillo set off to write. It was beautifully told and was riveting for my kids (ages 7 & 5 - boy & girl). I've come to accept and expect that books brought to life on the screen are not going to the the vision I had when I read them, but an interpretation by others who also experienced the story. C'est la vie. It was fun to watch - if not a little exciting - and certainly falls into the 'G' rating category. Enjoy the film and ignore these highly negative posts. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/2/2009A review of The Tale of Despereaux by The-Queen-D The Mouse is cute, the graphics are good, but the story is dark, weak and choppy. There were several parts in the movie that my daughter (5 1/2) found disturbing, if not terrifying. A story about a town that's all about soup? It's no wonder Campbell's has so many tie-in promotions with this film. You'd almost think they wrote it themselves. And why do these story-tellers keep wanting us to see mice (& sometimes rats) as these adorable creatures? They're vermin! Isn't Mickey enough? If you saw a mouse in your kitchen you wouldn't sit down and try to have a chat with it, you'd call the exterminator. But mommy why are you trying to kill Despereaux-Ratatouille-Mickey-Minnie-Gu s-Jaq-Miss Bianca-Bernard-Fievel-etc.? Seriously! ;-)
Don't waste your time and your child's mental well-being with this movie. Go see something funny - like Madagascar 2. Was this review helpful? If you are the parent of small kids do not be fooled by the rating. This is the child equivalent of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre! For adults, storyline is choppy, characters are difficult to like, and you'll have your kids having nightmares about being eaten my rats all night! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/29/2008A review of The Tale of Despereaux by ThirdPresident This movie is yet another example of studio contempt for authors of wonderful stories. For some reason Gary Ross thought he could dismiss the original story completely. His screen play is similar to the book in title and the names of the characters only. He must have been under the delusion that he was a better a story teller than DiCamillo. They had the acting talent they had the production talent but the screenplay dragged everything else down so low that it became a chore to sit through this stinker. This was a complete failure at capturing any of the magic from the wonderful story created by the book's author Kate DiCamillo.
The plot is a complete mess and utterly forgettable. The story is rushed and never reveals the characters beyond simplistic stereotypes. Christopher Lloyd's performance was a bright spot but it only lasted a handful of seconds. None of the other enormous talent in the movie ever got the chance to shine being forced to plow through some of the clunkiest lines I have ever had the displeasure to endure in a children's movie.
Take the kids ice skating instead or better yet buy Kate's book and read it to them. You won't be wasting your time like you would if you go see this movie Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/23/2008A review of The Tale of Despereaux by 3rdgradeteacher I was VERY disappointed with the movie. I have read the book to my classes for the last 4 years and couldn't wait to see the movie. It is NOTHING compared to the book. Do yourself a favor and read the book, it is a wonderful story... it is a shame that so many children will not read the book because of the movie. I hate when Hollywood does this to a great book.
