Sheltering Sky has made an important contribution in discovering the real beauty of Africa and its everyday drama. But at the same time, Debra Winger was able to connect to Eric Vu-An in an intimate and personal way that truly broaden the perspective of the relationship between black and white or simply between two people discovering each other without prejudice and greed trying to obliterate any corrupt concept of life. Although, it is true that the length should be reduced, some scenes were too trivial or unnecessary, what we need to retain from this is there is nothing more precious than love. It defines ultimately our identity. In that sens, Debra Winger emulates beautifully and dramatically the ideal beginning point of humanity ultimate creative process and purpose. Let us imagine for a moment that, suddenly, everything we possess disappear, no one to talk or listen to. Will such life bring us happiness? Life is a journey. There are many characters symbolizing every difficulties we face in life: Death, deceit, romance etc... Debra Winger, at the end of the movie, refuses to leave despite all the tragedies she went through. This final statement indicates that what we truly need, what really matters in life is a partner of love in order to experience joy and happiness. Sheltering Sky in that sens is not just a simple adventure but a real quest for love.
