With "High Noon" and "Shane", one of the best Westerns made.

It's not that easy to follow when watching over three film classes that meet once every five schooldays, but I got what was going on. Wayne is his usual self and that's good, and Jeffrey Hunter's not bad either. Scar might be played by a white man, but he gets the point across well. The story was probably pretty original when the movie came out, or at least not extremely common. Also, the comic relief provided by Hunter's accidental wife is well placed. Overall it is a movie worth seeing, especially if you can see it all at once.

This is probably the best western ever made.It depicts the five year search of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) and Martin Pauly (Jeffrey Hunter) for Ethans neice who was abducted by Comanches after a raid in which she was the sole suvivor. It is one of the few movies I've seen that is as good as the book upon which it is based. John Ford is able to convey the sense of time without causing the story to drag. John Wayne's performance is outstanding as the racist Ethan who is as uncompromising as the west Texas landscape he inhabits, vowing to kill his neice because she is living with the Comanches. The scene that best shows Ethans hatred, is when visiting a cavalry outpost after an attack on an indian village, having viewed the captive whites that were recovered, Ethan is asked to step into another room to view the dead. Before entering the room he looks back at the live captives and Wayne has a look of sutch pure evil that you know if it was up to him he'd shoot them all. The fact that Wayne was'nt at least nominated for an oscar is amazing. Watch for Hank Worden, he's a scene stealer as the near imbecilic Mose Harper.
