I really enjoyed this movie. It was beautiful and well written. It really attracted you to its characters and the actors and actesses made you feel like you were watching life rather than a movie. I would definatly recomend you watch this movie at least once.

It was one of the wosrt movies that ever recd an awards/oscar. I have never seen anyone so naked before, I mean every other scene was a nude scene totaly uncalled for. They could have put more emphasisi on the story, Michael's family life, Hanna's feelings and thoughts. The worst film I have seen in a LONG time

I was reading reviews after seeing the movie last weekend and I don't understand why it has such high praise from everyone. The movie was soooo boring. Maybe if they showed less sex sceens and showed the actual events that lead up to her being on trial the movie would have been alot better. I have no idea why Kate Winslet won a oscar for her role in this film. (which is why I went to see it in the first place). If anyone saw Angelina Joile in Changeling. She deserved the oscar alot more. For a way more powerful performance.

Saw the film last night and will be haunted by it for some time; am likely to re-see it. A film about personal responsibility and the lack of it, it transcends the haunting Holocaust theme and enters the realm of what-is-my-role-in-this. Hannah is an amoral individual, much as her country was; but amorality does not excuse her or Germany. We find here a person (and country) without a moral center, acting without conscience -- whether in regard to a mere boy or in regard to countless old women marked for death. The boy-turned-man has to deal with his apartness, his treatment of the family he came from as well as the daughter he brought into this world. After an encounter with his daughter, Michael re-joins his past in a meaningful way that symbolizes his asking what-is-my-role-in-this.

Usually I don't agree with the Oscars award but I agree with Kate's award. I've noticed that whenever an actor is overdue at the Osacrs, they let him/her win for the wrong role instead of the right one. However this is not the case here. Kate gave a very strong and powerful performance that is both subtle and moving. The movie itself is very good. Though it has a slow pace, you will be attached to the screen waiting for the events to unveil. Also this movie views the Holocasut in a new light, exploring things that other movies failed to look at.

Great acting from two fabulous actors. Michael could never forgive her for committing such heineous war crimes however by the same token he loved her. that ankst kept him from loving anyone again in his life. Perhaps this will change as he discloses for the first time the history of the relationship with his daughter.

It was thought provoking. However, the emotional constipation by the main characters was terribly frustrating and puzzling. It does beg the question whether it allows us into cultural norms of that society at that time. The story is full of contradiction. She blindly and heartlessly follows orders becasue it was "her job". He can't open up to anyone except her and only when he is a teenager. Yet she at times is warm (in an effecient sort of way), and he is open to love her and give his all (but closes himself up as an adult) During the scene with the grown grand-daughter of one of the victims, I wanted to shake him and scream "wake up you idiot". He plods through life thinking of the past with a burden, yet does nothing to rid himself of it. And she is doomed with guilt that she is ubable to address or acknowledge. What a cold and heartless life on both accounts.

This was a deeply disturbing movie on three different levels. Obviously,we are all horrified by the Holocaust atrocities, and this was depicted in the trial scenes very powerfully. We are also disturbed by Kate Winslet's character. She is a doomed figure, and all the trial and post-trial scenes make this obvious. But the movie truly belongs to the Ralph Fiennes' character. His character allows us to truly feel how disturbing this movie is. It is he who perhaps truly loves but is unable to allow himself to love. He cannot allow himself to speak for her at the trial,he cannot allow himself to return her letters,he cannot allow himself to visit her over the twenty years she is incarcerated, and when he does finally visit her he cannot embrace her let alone hold her hand for long. What she has done shocks and tortures him. Yet he painstakingly records book upon book for her, reflects on his sexual encounters with her, remembers how she bathed him with tenderness, visits the lone surviver's daughter in New York as she requested rather than simply mailing the money, and as the movie concludes he even takes his daughter to the church where he has buried her in order to tell his daughter the story of their relationship. It seems he loved her so intimately as a teen, and he perhaps loved her from afar as an adult. In fact,it seems on a superficial level that he didn't really love her at all as an adult, but it just might be that he repressed his love because of his difficulty in accepting her deed as a young woman. Loss of life and cruelty are obvious Holocaust horrors, but his story is also part of the spoils of war.

Here is my take on this excellent movie, now remember, this is my take only. I feel as if Helen was perfectly fine with the war crimes she committed (even though she took the blame b/c she didn’t want anyone to know she couldn’t read or write). What got her in the end was when Michael came to visit her. She reaches out her hand and he doesn't respond to her. She was devastated, she loved him. The ONLY person she thought that loved her appeared as though he didn’t. Also, with his reaction, she saw how she had affected his life, he didn’t know how to express his feelings, he was cold, timid(although, he was still very much in love with her and you can tell by the way he puts the effort into furnishing her apartment and bringing her flowers on the day of her release). She looked at her war crimes as her job (as sick as that sounds), nothing more. If he had showed affection to her, she wouldn’t have ……. herself at the end. Again this is my view only and may not be correct, but this is how I interpreted the movie.

Posted: 1/23/2009A review of The Reader by 4Sher1
Hollywood (so to speak) has a way of helping us to swallow the pill of acceptance and sympathy in any size, shape, or taste; ie..statutory rap, war criminals, etc… This story of a woman who is naive and illiterate and more ashamed of that fact would rather take her chances on going to prison for war crimes then have anyone find out what to her is the most humiliating of the two. I must admit the movie was well done and believable. You could plop this story line in just about any controversial real life or movie drama and get 4 to 5 star response. Remember madam X (great oldie). Many may not understand this movie because you have to think about it. It would seem the young man is cold not to rescue her but after a few flashbacks and some thought about it he finally realizes that to her the illiteracy is more shameful than being accused of war crimes. Once she cures the illiteracy problem she realizes the “war crimes is worst”!

Excellent acting, directing, screenplay, editing, and score are all present in this Oscar caliber film dealing with the complex psychological issues in Germany resulting from the Holocaust. The movie is riveting throughout and allows the viewer to personally decide at the end about the important issues raised. Winslet is brilliant and probably will cop an Oscar for her performance.

Didn't get much advertising but this is an excellent movie. Mature not for children. Excellent story and cinematography was very captivating. I believe that "The reader" should have gotten more attention and awards at the Golden Globe Awards. Very happy Kate W won supporting actress in her role. Well done!!
