What was the hoopla about the Queen? Yes the acting was convincing, but this should have been a made for TV movie. I found nothing in this film that stayed with me later. Solid, slick and well produced, but nothing beyond that. So now, we know that Royals have feelings too and actually, deep down, are as human and sensitive as the restl of us mortals-great revelation, no?????!!! Id see it this on a plane.

With a very good screenplay and a good direction for stephen frears,HELEN MIRREN gives a performance who deserves more than an OSCAR.the writer picked a very good time(princess diana death) to express to us the daily and domestic life of a controversial family.

I have been crazy about all that is British since I have been a child. I have been to London twice in my quest to understand the British better. This movie gave me insight into both the British peoples hearts and the queens as well. When putting HRH down we forget that being the monarch is all Elizabeth has ever known. She became queen at a very early age and devoted all of her long life to serving the British Commonwealth and its people. Sure, she has enjoyed a life of luxury but also one of duty the extent of which we could never understand. This movie portrayed a women caught up in a situation she could not understand and her sense of what was appropriate in such unusual circumstances was based on what it always was...duty and what was best for her country. While I know that Elizabeth had difficulty understanding Diana and dealing with the unrest that resulted, I believe that her motivation for her behavior the week following Dianas death was not out of bitterness but what truly was best for the two princes and the country as a whole. I believe the most touching scene of all was when she was given flowers by the young girl in the crowd as the queen looked over the flowers and gifts left for Diana by the people. She was expecting the disdain of the crowd but recieved their love instead. I see her as a woman trying to chance with the times but having immense difficulty doing so.

I disagree with The Queen detractor as follows fawning attitude towards the monarchy is not what I saw. QE was basically defeated in this account. She (Helen Mirren) handled that (political) defeat with dignity appropriate to the title - and with a perfect sort of pragmatic humility. No sympathy for her except for contempt toward the obsolete monarchy? I am as anti-royalist as anybody, but this film DID humanize QE2. Pompous... coddled, pampered... yes, not unlike the wealthy in other places (such as here in the USA). Detractor doesnt notice he or she borrowed the British term stalked...? I hate killing for sport, and apparently the Queen doesnt care that much for it, either. Elizabeth does not possess the two most important qualities that a... monarch should have -grace and compassion. This is simply, conspicuously wrong, though compassion is not easy for some to show (and that was brilliantly depicted in the film. ... have to be told what normal human emotions to express to the public? ...shows more feeling for an dead animal than for the mother of her grandchildren...? Ever heard of in-laws? It was a failed marriage, for petes sake! Detractor is entitled to his or her opinion, but missed an important point The real conflict was between the contemporary era in which the media - right or wrong - has enormous power to shape public opinion... vs. the archaic eras in which the royals had such power. ...callousness (at) the loss of Diana and the grief of millions...? The detractors view is entirely conforming to the media age view. Both sides of this personal and political conflict were wrong... both could have handled things better. That is the irony of being human... life is a challenge nobodys perfect... no one political position is ALWAYS completely right. The Queen is a GREAT movie. Possibly those who didnt get it are young people who have much to learn.

I really enjoyed this film. Helen Mirren is one of the best actresses of our time. Her portrayal of the queen was right on. It was hard to watch her and remember that she was not the actual queen herself! It was a very sad time for this family and the country as a whole and it was portrayed as accurately as possible and with as much class and respect as it needed. I remember thinking at that time that people are forgetting that she is a grandmother as well as the queen. I think Helen Mirren should get an academy award for sure.

This may have been good as a TV documentary, at least I could have done something productive while it was on. I dozed off at the end. It had a definite slanted view, I never felt any sympathy for the queen, her husband was portrayed as a real jerk and Blair as a commoner come to save England, but half way thru switched sides. He even did the washing up after supper. Be for real folks. That was an overkill of making him a man of the people. And we all knew how it was going to end. Wait for Blockbuster.

Queen is a practical, pragmatic lesson for people who aspire to lead others. With 26 years of experience in the corporate training world I have not seen a better film addressing the subject.

I am great fan of Stephen Frears and have watched most of his films and went to see the movie with great eagerness. I found the film slightly fawning attitude towards the monarchy and the directors attempt ultimately to paint a sympathetic portrait of Elizabeth quite pointless. I did not receive any great insight into to the queens persona as is mentioned in the critics reviews. I did not feel any sympathy for her except for contempt at an institution which utterly obsolete and out of touch with the real world as the English monarchy is. The queen pompously mentions herself doing her duty without much fuss except the only duty she she seems to perform is to drink endless cups of tea and rush her family off to Balmoral to stalk defenseless animals which should be preserved instead of being killed. It seemed as though Elizabeth does not possess the two most important qualities that a puppet monarch should have -grace and compassion. Indeed, she is propped up, coddled, and pampered by hundreds of servants to the point where she and her clueless spouse have to be told what normal human emotions to express to the public. I did like the scene where she shows more feeling for an dead animal than for the mother of her grandchildren who had died in such a horrible accident. The queen Mother and Prince Phillip are equally revolting in their callousness and lack of feeling for the loss of Diana and the grief of millions at this traumatic event. I was surprised at Charles emotional reaction. I thought Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen as Elizabeth Tony Blair, respectively, were both superb. I loved the tongue-in-cheek humour displayed through the actors playing Blairs wife assistant. In conclusion - I wish I hadnt wasted my time and money.

I personallly enjoyed this movie from start to fiinish. A movie with character development, expression, quality acting and insight into a slice of recent history. I am primed for some movies that have depth and that do not soley rely on special effects and crashes and celebrity power. Helen Mirren makes it happen and the supporting cast did their job as well. If I were selecting academy award, Helen Mirren would be on my list.

When the divine Ms. Mirren portrays Elizabeth I, she has to contend with corsets, hoop skirts and fright wigs playing Elizabeth II involves filtering a performance past an audience who have all seen and heard Her Maj during a lifetime of public appearances. I wonder which she found more difficult? During the entire 101 minutes of this film (and she is in almost every scene), Mirren never puts a foot wrong. For her duplication of the Queens posture alone (years of deportement lessons, you know), Mirren should win an Oscar. By her every movement, gesture and inflection, she suggests a woman who has often been thwarted, but never over-ruled. Mirren has sharpened her melifluous tones into the thin uperclass voice of Elizabeth II, yet holds herself above the lines of parody. She shows, with great delicacy, the absolute isolation of a life that forces Elizabeth to be the very backbone of the Royal establishment. As Tony Blair rightly points out in the film, The Queen has served selflessly, for over 50 years, in a job that she neither wanted nor asked for and which she saw kill her father prematurely. This film has surpassed all my expectations. Elizabeth II was portrayed with dignity and without rancor. It is a must see!
