This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I taped it on HBO years ago and have kept it and watched it several times since the early 90s. If you are a fan of satire, you can appreciate the way it was made. If you are also a fan of Holly Hunter (as I am), you will love this movie as much as I do. The story is of a Texas mother whose anger at her daughter's disqualification from cheerleader competition turns deadly. The true story, though, is the character of Wanda Holloway, played by Holly Hunter. Her anger turns deadly ultimately because she is unable to control everything and everyone around her. She cannot bear her own envy of the mother and daughter whose cheerleading bids seem unassailable.Dramatizations of the events surrounding Wanda's solicitation of murder are interspersed with scenes where Wanda and her daughter, Shanna, are being interviewed on a closed set by a reporter from ";A Current Affair."; In these dialogues, we are treated to a glimpse of the eternal desperation as Wanda paints herself as the victim of a frame-up and adamantly denies any wrongdoing.Having lived near Channelview, TX, as a teenager, I get a lot of the local irony; but even without it, this film would be a winner. Holly plays Wanda to perfection--a tight-assed, freaky Texas bitch-mom. And Wanda is a real person! The other parts are equally well-cast. This Positively True story proves the axiom that truth is stranger than fiction.
