There is a back-story created that explains how there could be pirates who don't do anything - our three heroes are really bus boys at a dinner theater who aspire to be in the pirate musical. A case of mistaken identiy leads them to the distant past where a princess needs rescuin', and it's game on.
Veggie fans can more or less guess how this is going to go. My 5 year old daughter seemed to enjoy herself and giggled from time to time. As a warning, she was frightened by the killer cheese puffs and the walking rocks, but she frightens very easily at movies and it didn't seem that other children in the theater were scared. The movie does not have the expected Veggie opening and closing moral messages, and this is a wholly secular effort (unless you want to see the king's speech at the end as symbolic, but I think that's a stretch). This is either good or bad depending on your perspective I guess, but I missed it. Don't expect to see Bob, but there are cameos by many of our old friends here, so it was fun to look for them.
For the adults, there really wasn't much here. We have a pretty large collection of videos, and I find myself amused and charmed by most of them. This one was a little slow, with a few chuckles but no belly laughs. The music video cover of Rock Lobster at the final credits was a highlight in that regard. My biggest disappointment was that they basically left the Silly Song that inspired all this out of it. There's a rock version of the first verse - the serious one - over part of the closing credits. But that's it, and I have to admit I felt a little like I'd licked a spark plug. The killer cheese puffs were funny, but I still wanted to see someone paint some daisies on a big red rubber ball.
