This is my favorite book of all time!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the book. The movie didn't even come to close to the book. I mean it was more about Anne than Mary. I was hoping the movie would show more of Mary's love interests. I mean she hopelessly loved Henry and she worshiped Stafford as Stafford worshiped her. And at one time Henry did love Mary. And I do NOT believe that Henry raped Anne. He was enamoured by her and he worshiped her. I mean he did tear his kingdom apart for her. He wrote beautiful sonnets and songs just for Anne....Greensleeves was for her. Eric Bana did a horrible job portraying King Henry. True Henry had a temper and he was intimidating but he was also doting and loving and he had a wonderful sense of humor. Natalie Portman....as Anne...well she didn't do too bad of a job. It was also nice to see her in a different role. Scarlett Johansen as Mary. I'm not a big fan of her so there defintely could have been a better choice. Her acting isn't that great. Anyways, if I were Philippa Gregory I would be OUTRAGED at the director or screenwriter or whatever. It was nothing like the book. I was thoroughly disappointed. BTW, I own that whole series, if they do anymore of her books which in my opinion all in that series (Constant Princess, Boleyn Inheritance, The Queen's Fool, and The Virgin's Lover) are great candidates to become a movie....if only they stick to HER story!

For alll of you who said this was a bad movie you must be blind. The costumes and actresses where beautiful. How could you not like this reinactment of the glamour and glitz of the european court. I also read the book and for those of you who said you wish it included more details; well lets just say that movie would of been six hours long! loved it! Lo

Like most of you, I have read The Other Boleyn Girl numerous times and have even read all the other books written by Philippa Gregory about this time era. I have eagerly been awaiting the arrival of this movie for months now. When I finally did see the movie, I was captivated and a little disapointed. But then, how do you squish one of the most monumental incidents in English history, an event that spanned many years, into two hours and properly capture the politics, the history, the emotions, and the characters who were intertwined in that time period? I thought the book was fairly historically accurate. Obviously there were some things in it that are still being disputed by historians, but since no one really knows the answer, the authoress had to choose a side. And Gregory did her research! A lot of that research was left out of the movie. The book was even altered a little. But the acting was phenomenal. I'm not a huge fan of Natalie Portman, but I believe that she pulled off Anne Boleyn, and Scarlett Johansson, Jim Sturgess, and Eric Bana all did extremely well. The movie had top notch acting! Of course the movie does not come close to the book but I don't remember the last time I watched a movie that did its origin justice. For what was to be worked with, the movie was excellent! If you don't read the book first, you'll porbably be lost. Even still, enjoy it for what it is and appreciate the effort. By the way, I have to disagree that the book was degrading to women. It was, in fact, about two very different girls, who were thrust into the games and gambles of the "superior" gender, and who both broke the rules, only each in a very separate and specific way. Whether you like Anne or not, she changed England, politically and religiously. And Mary lived happily ever after! Take your pick...

After reading the absolutely fantastic book I was eagerly awaiting the movie. It was like a Reader's Digest condensed version, condensed once again. So much was left out. Having said that, the costumes were beautiful as were the sets. The acting and casting were fine. I was just disappointed that the "meat" of the book was not there.

I loved this movie! I really want to read the book now. Great job all the way around from the actors to the costume design. A must be seen movie in a sea of bad movies out there.

I read the book shortly before seeing the movie. I too loved the book, and I also enjoyed the movie. The book covers such a volume of information. It would have been impossible in a two hour movie to portrary the depth of all that information. So in order to paint the picture - snippets of information are used to move the movie forward and give you just a framework of what happened. So if you have read the book - you are definitely left with the feeling that the movie has no depth. But - it was fun to watch.

Ok for those that think that this book was excellent- you really need to read more often. The book was long, boring and degrading to women; as was the movie. Maybe a crappy time to be a lady. However I stand by the fact that this movie was as bad as if not worse then Marie Antionette the movie :( I have to say good work to the person who made the trailer you fooled us all!!! Because this movie from start to end is absolutely boring. PS for those that like Henry the 8th or whatever I suggest watching the tudors- with CBC.

The Other Boleyn Girl is easily one of the best books I’ve read ... not because of historical accuracy, but its just fun to read and I couldn’t put it down for hours. I was so excited to see this movie ... but it’s NOTHING like the book!! In-Fact, it’s not even really historically accurate either. The basics are there ... King Henry wants a son; he parts with the Catholic Church... He chops of his wife's head. But it’s like the screen writer filled the rest in with whatever tickled his fancy. Even as a movie apart from the book it didn’t really grab my interest, or keep it. I left the theater disappointed.

I agree with many of the reviews. The screenwriting was not well researched, in terms of basing it on the actual novel and historically speaking as well. Most of what took place in the movie didn't happen at all, historically or in the book (which was wonderful and well written). They should have gave it a different title seeing as it was almost a completely different story. They also didnt span the time out the way they should of, this affair between Ann and Mary and the king lasted almost 10 years, The king was already gaining a terrible amount of weight and was in his mid 40's by the 2nd year of marraige to Ann. To sum it all up, it was just a badly mad movie, and the actresses didnt do the characters any justice.

There are bad movies... and then there are the truly terrible ones you either sleep through or escape from. This movie is a definite sleeper. Actually, I needed the rest so perhaps I should have awarded it two stars. Two inteliligent actresses were completely wasted in one-dimensional roles. They were definitely not sexy, so there's nothing that would interest any male under the age of senility. And the script was laughable. Eric Bana, a fine actor, had almost nothing to say as Henry VIII and had to resort to long stares to reflect his emotions. I have seen many depictions of the young KIng Henry, but this was by far the most boring. What ever happened to Charles Laughton? It really wasn't Bana's fault, he was just not giving anything interesting or witty to say. If you'd like to get get a good snore, bring a pillow along. If you're looking to be entertained, amused, shocked or enlightened --- stay away!!! This movie deserves a zero.

I was so excited to both read and see this movie. I bagan reading the book about 2 weeks befoe the movie came out and it was nice having faces to the people I was reading about. I loved the book!!!!  I'll read it over and over again!!!!! I saw the movie today and it was the worst movie from book I have ever seen. If they had called the movie something differnt from the book I think I wouldn't be so upset. They still could have said 'Adapted from the book...' but I think having it have the same name as the book was VERY misleading.

This movie that is supposed to be from the book, did not bring to life the book at all. They took the idea of the book and made their own story. Very choppy, to many holes, innacurate historically and even innacurate to the story line of the book. They way the girls met King Henry in the movie, is not the way it happened in the book or historically which was my first indication that they made things up as they went along. No prominent, very important characters such as Wolsey were displayed. Mary had TWO children by King Henry and he DID recognize them. No mention of his son from Bessie Blunt. Anne was instrumental in helping Mary "please the King" for many years before she stepped into the limelight. They dismiss the fact that Ann gave birth to a deformed still born and that is what fueled the fire of speculation against her. No mention to the fact that Mary reunited with her husband and having formed a loving relationship, lost him to the Sweat. Mary was not banished from court, she requested that she and her children be released from the binds of court to live her life. And she did not take the Princess Elizabeth to raise from court. King Henry did not rape Anne, the had "relations" before they got married. Anne was pregnant with Elizabeth when they got married. If they did not want to stay with the historical facts. They should have followed the story line of the book which they absolutely did not. Again they took the idea and title and made up their own story and poorly at that. Phillipa Gregory should be horrified at the job done and should have more input if ever deciding to have one of her story's put on screen. Please someone take this wonderful novel, re-cast, and do, not only the novel, but Anne, Mary, George and King Henry the justice and respect of telling their stories appropriatley. If you haven't read the book...here's a good idea...take the money for the movie ticket, and purchase the book. Trust me it will be money and time much more well spent.

I LOVED this book and found it completely captivating I couldn't put it down. I was so excited to see the book come to life in a movie and couldnt wait. But am so disappointed now. The movie did not do the book justice at all. I feel as if the editors or peopel who wrote the screenplay did not even read the book. There were so many key parts of the storyline in the book that were completely left out. Why did they try to tell the story from both Anne and Mary's perspectives, the whole point of the book was to tell the story from Mary's point of view. What happened to Cardinal Wosley? And George was a MAJOR character in the book, it was always the 3 Boleyns, they did not even touch on this. Henry NEVER raped Anne, I was sooo completely upset by this in the movie. I also cannot believe they did not show how Anne adopted Mary's son as her own. They truly did not touch on the key parts of the book nor did they develop the characters as well as they could have which would have added so much more to the movie.

Disappointed in this movie - - Eric Bana is good in other vehicles, not this. He's miscast and it shows. Kristin Scott-Thomas' is by far the best performance.
