Even with the ending, I think this movie is one of the best in this genre. Johnny Depp once again becomes whatever character he is playing. Unlike many people I think the movie couldn't have ended in any other way. I mean would you rather see a monster at the end or some hellish place created by graphics, I think not. This ending made the movie more real and added to this mystery. I think this movie was made to scare you and shake you and not give you peace of mind. As for the green eyed actress she was excellent and for some reason I felt a strong chemistry between her and Depp. If I didn't know that he met Paradis during the filming of that movie I would have thought that he was involved with this actress. Another aspect that I really like about this movie is the music. The music is kind of scary and filled with mystery at the same time just like the movie.

I liked this movie. Trying to figure out where it all was going, and where the characters fit in with the story line. I figured the blonde was of some evil force and not of this world, when she would fly down from high place...That gave her away. I did not know? until the end Boris was worshipping the 9th gate and satan. I did not like the ending at all. It left you hanging??? Knew, the blonde green eyed woman was evil, I had no idea Johnny Depp character would fall for her evil spell. Maybe, Johnny's character took up where Boris left off. He fell right into the 9th gate of hell on the very end??? Not sure on the ending ? where the orginial book really was located. I felt like the twin brothers may have had more to do with the books, then they lead on? One of the pages Johnny was examining, on the top of one of the pages in the very beginning after meeting the brothers, was a man with sword over looking the bridge,,,the close up of the man with the sword looked just like the twin brothers exact face and facial hair, mustache looked like them... I thought maybe, they had forged the copies for money? Where did they go at the end of movie, when johnny returned back to the shop after she left the note on the windshield of the range rover. Why was only one sheet left? and it happened to be her on the final sheet back at the castle? She was the devil. Johnny was in too deep and crossed over to her side? Ole well,,,who knows? Only Roman knows !!!

Roman Polanski has conjured up a truly dark, foreboding and moody film and the stylish settings serve it well. The lack of characterisation arguably tightens the grip on you as you accompany Depp on the mysterious journey.

However by the end of the second third, you are yearning to understand where it is headed, and require some more basic story information and explanations as to the history and meaning of the books, what the pictures actually stand for, and what happens to you once you go through the The Ninth Gate.

Watching the DVD with commentary doesn't help either. In the final few chapters Polanski does little more than babble on about technical aspects of the film, perhaps trying to detract from the fact it was hurriedly finished.

All in all, The Ninth Gate is comparable with 'The Final Conflict: Omen III': after a premise filled with such anticipation, you are left somewhat unfulfilled.

I'm a big thriller fan, so I'm probably a bit biased towards this movie. It may not be flashy or spelled out in black and white, but that's what I like about it... it's sinister without being obvious. The movie has a very conspirational feeling about it, and every character is flawed in obvious human ways. The whole thing is a great look into the face of evil. I highly recommend it to fans of psych thrillers and Depp.

Green Eyes stole the show in this one, she and Lina Olin. What a fabulous movie. Love Johnny Depp in all of his movies but this girl should be in many more movies, I would like to see her instead of Halle Berry or any lame acctresses they push on us movie goers all the time, she is faciniating and very sext without trying to be either. Roman Polanski is very witty about finding young exotic girls for his movie, but she is the best I have seen in a long time, Johnny should have keep this one for himself. I would have and I like men.

I have read some horrible reviews for this movie. Still, the movie continues to have a (pardon the pun) ";Cult Following";. This is a movie that you will either love or hate it. Hardly anyone is in between on their opinion. For me, Roman Polanski's name carries a lot. I have not had the pleasure to work with him yet but I can tell you it is a good film for those who enjoy who done it/suspense flicks. It's a plot that takes a while to build but keeps you interested. The ending gets a bit out of hand but the outcome leaves you thinking. It is a favorite just like, ";Garden of good and evil";.

I normally enjoy watching a performance by Johnny Depp, but in this movie he was bland and unexpressive. The movie was the epitome of boring, but it held my interest just because I wanted to see if the blonde was good or evil and you know what? At the end, I STILL didn't have an answer to my question. Was she the devil reincarnated or what? What a waste of time.

The movie wasn't so bad-minus the ending that left you hanging there, angry and confused that you are left with no explanation of what happened over the last 2 hours.
