Director Wim Wenders describes his ";The Million Dollar Hotel"; as ";an extraordinary story about ordinary people";, but nothing about these characters is ordinary. Davies, Jovovich, Smits, and the other hotel residents are quite convincing as loonies. With the exception of Davies' character Tom Tom, and to a degree Jovovich's character Eloise, most of the characters are pretty one-dimensional, but the diversity of their quirkiness is definitely entertaining. Gibson certainly found an unusual role for himself in this film: a stodgy, government-employed, undercover freak who treats every suspect as though they are guilty of murder. The soundtrack, as is typical of Wenders' films, was left in the charge of Bono and friends, and truly fits and complements the mood of the film. The jazzy/moody/trashy sound, together with imagery in the same vein, makes for some beautiful moments. The film had some clarity problems; it took a couple of viewings to figure out what exactly was going on, and sometimes Davies' narration and dialog is so low-spoken, it's easy to miss important lines. So you have to pay close attention sometimes, maybe watch it twice, but it's well worth it. The characters and the way they live out their emotions are touching, and even though there's a sad mood going throughout the movie, there are many funny spots. ";The Million Dollar Hotel"; left me with a good kind of introspective feeling.
