This production marks the beginning of an artistic rift between Welles and RKO that was never to close; so great an abyss, in fact; that the studio led a high-handed maneuver in Welles absence which dictated that editor Robert Wise re-shoot and re-cut the ending to the studio's desires; a cut that smarted Welles until his death and deftly scarred an otherwise classic. The Ambersons are the ruling class family in their small turn-of-the-century world until the Industrial Revolution collapses their lifetime of influence in a few short months eventually driving the younger heir to the throne, over the edge. The theme of this movie seems to be 'the young upstart gets his come-uppance'. But is it a thinly disguised retaliation of jealous studio heads who never recuperated from Welles' success in so many areas where they had failed? We may never know. But the Author has his suspicions.
