I know because I have read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy three times and the Silmarillion twice starting in 1977. The Silmarillion is Tolkien's creation and history of Middle Earth up to the defeat of Sauron and the murder of King Isildur resulting in the loss of the One Ring of Power.
The first two movies in this trilogy were outstanding despite the fact that many parts of the story had to be left out of the movies and I understand the same had to be done with the Return of the King but the third and final installment of this trilogy is an absolute disgrace. Not only was half or more of the story omitted from the movie but there is dialogue between characters that never happened and the movie added so much garbage that was never in Tolkien's story that I walked out of the theater in disgust. I kept going back in hoping to see justice done to Tolkien's masterpiece but never lasted more than a minute or two before walking out muttering that something never happened or was said by a character in the book.
As much as I enjoyed the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers I must state that the Return of the King is a disgraceful, shameful, capitalistic rape of a man's life work. Read the book to get the real story of the Return of the King.
If you did not read the book, you do not have a clue and you will love the movie. If you read and loved the book as I did, don't waste you're money and time.

Was this review helpful? Someone who truly loves and enjoys the story will read the books and use the movies as a supplement, of sorts. Was this review helpful? I have waited anxiously for the third and final instalment and I wasn't disappointed. A very worthy finish for an exceptional trilogy. Was this review helpful? The casting was excellent, the special effects were amazing, the movie itself just blew me away! The Lord of the Rings trilogy is most definitely the best movie of all time. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 12/29/2003A review of The Lord of the Rings [Film Series] by David_is_here_for_now The final chapter of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a cinematic masterpiece, bringing the epic story of Middle Earth to its rightful and masterful conclusion. It gets my vote for Best Picture. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/17/2003A review of The Lord of the Rings [Film Series] by Anonymous Peter Jackson catches so much of Tolkien's intent it is difficult to complain. However, the Lord of the Rings is about the hobbits' journeys and how they change. Leaving out the "revenge" of Saruman at the end in favor of a [too] long "good-bye" lessens the message of the story. I understood every decision for leaving out or changing parts of the story[Arwen, Tom Bombadil,- Merry, Eowyn and Faramir in the infirmary, Pippen and the troll], but the single choice of leaving out the fight with evil men when the hobbits return to the Shire robs the story of its most important moral: what doesn't kill us, strengthens us. Our experiences define our actions. The hobbits rising against the evil men in Hobbiton completes their journey of bravery and independence. It is disappointing to go 99 percent of the way and stop before the last battle. Audiences shouldn't have to wait for the extended version to complete the journey. Having said that, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a triumph of the best story ever told, and ought to win Best Picture Oscar and Best Director. They should also create an ensemble acting award, because all stand out. Was this review helpful?
