To start with, i never liked depp before. Now, this movie, is a masterpiece. This one is for the depressed, and for the happy willing to think. Beautifully exacuted, great enough performance, and flawlessly ended, this was about the human psyche, art, sad pleasures, and the little things (if not the one) that drives our lives. If you are way too happy, do not watch it... If u are way too relegious, do not watch it... If you are way too numb, do not watch it... if you are way too dumb, do not watch it... If you were anything else, and specially if you ever enjoyed abrupt screaming in a soothing melodic song, this might be one of the most touching movies for you... It so was for me. About an Empty Bottle...

I thought this movie was absolutely horrible. Since seeing the Pirates of the Carribean - Dead Mans Chest then seeing this one, made me say What was Johnny Depp thinking. This has been one of Johnny Depps worst films yet. I thought Edward Scissor Hands was bad but this one took the cake. The film dragged on and on, the story line was extremely boring and the acting was just has bad. I do not wish for anyone to rent this movie and waist your money.

The Libertine freeing Jameson Thottams mind I find a very deep look into the morality, reason, and psyche of mankind through Johnnys character as it relates to the environment which was allowed to shape it. and what I also believe to be a good representation of a historic moral reality. This movie is not for the faint or heart or the shallow of mind nor the ignorant. The Libertine was from the beginning a work of art. People may not understand it as I Jameson Thottam see it as an actors movie. You need to understand the obstacles of playing a character like Rochester, and for once not having to be the gorgeous leading man that Hollywood wants you to be. The character development was flawless on Depps part. When he was diseased in the end it was almost like his disease and Rochester became a mask and he acted through it. I was entranced throughout. Even the look of the movie was perfect. I have watched it so many times already, I was amazed. This was Johnny Depps most complex role and he executed with a unique flare and a soulful brilliance. The writing, character development and directing were outstanding. Where Quills detailed the life and soul of a madman, The Libertine gives us a glimpse into the life of a true iconoclast. The Second Earl of Rochester is the amoral narcisist we all secretly wish we (including Jameson Thottam) could be. If you go expecting the lovable Jack Sparrow, you will be disappointed. If you go wondering how Johnny Depp will recreate himself this time, you will love it. Jameson Thottam was captured by the opening prologue, found his portrayal of a hedonist amazing, and was in tears by the end of the movie. I believe those that understand the times and the lifestyle lived will come away from this movie touched those that expect something easy to understand will not like it. Go to see it prepared to think. This is Depps best work Jameson Thottam.

I am a big fan of Johnny Depp. I have seen and liked most of his movies, even the supposedly failed ones. Chocalat, for example, was great. This movie is one of the worst messes I have ever had to sit through. Johnny Depp warns in the opening monologue You are not going to like me. Fair enough, I dont have to like a character to like a movie. But why make a movie about a character with no redeeming characteristics at all? He was supposed to be brilliant - never saw a hint of it. He was supposed to be a libertine - from this movie I have to assume that that means someone who has zero interest in sex but who occasionally indulges in pointless sexual encounters devoid of pleasure. The character appeared to be totally dead inside, loving no one, enjoying nothing in life, just trying to dull the pain of living through self-abuse. Why, you say? Who knows? The movie completely fails to present any reason for his self-loathing. If that sounds to you like a fun movie to watch, hey, dont say you havent been warned.

I have not seen this film, hence my giving it a middle of the road review. I very much wanted to see this film, but I live in Podunk, CA where art house films are rarely if ever shown, the nearest theater to me that played this movie was a four hour drive away. Anyways, to those who complain about the pornography and crude language have you ever read any Restoration Lit? Ever read Gullivers Travel, now that is not a novel for kiddies no matter what Disney did to it. Restoration Lit, is bawdy, raunchy, and full of sexual double entendres. Rochesters works, more so than others. The narrators of his poems were all about the Wine, Women, and Song......and maybe the occasional page boy on the side. So to those of you who didnt get in to the movie because of its adult themes....check out some Restoration Literature so that you can understand the background of the film before you judge it as a bad movie because of its adult themes.

I felt totally disappointed by Johnny and John malkovich who produced this movie. The opening speech gave me a claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in a corner by a smelly drunk. I think johnny was really drunk during this movie his eyes glistened in a way you cant act out. I didnt understand what they were talking about, there were so many casual entrances and exits that you werent sure of the timelines. Everything was brown! his wig,his clothes, the rooms, the floor, the wine. The whole thing reminded me of a Robert Downey Jr movie called Restoration made in 1995, which was also filmed in a candlelite sepia fuzz where once again in King Charles court, Robert was drunk and carrying on like a 16th century frat boy giving the king a hard time. These movies are like an 80s teen movie set in the 16th century. Both johnny and john malkovich live in France. It was conspiracy. Johnnys way of destroying Jack sparrow and saying leave me alone or Ill take your money.

This movie is not for everyone. There is nudity, sex, alcohol and other things that will offend. The movie, itself, is not for most Americans. It lacks explosions, random gun violence and fast cars. However, anyone that can go into a movie expecting to follow a story, (albeit a dark one) brilliant acting and subtle humor will thoroughly enjoy it. Johnny Depp has proved again that he doesnt care about critical review or recieving an Oscar. He will take an intricate character and play in a movie that will not be heavily marketable or widely recieved. But he will give his fans what they want. An outstanding performance that is rivaled by no other person Hollywood has to offer today.

Posted: 3/31/2006A review of The Libertine by jacksautosales
Its hard to define what this movie is about, or to have a clear picture of the point of the entire effort. Is is that everything old is new again? Are the excesses of the 1600s, with public sex, contempt for authority, consumption to extremes being mirrored in some statement of the conditions we live in today? Or, is this simply a morality play showing the decay of a human that lives to excess. (Depp looked like he had severe aids on his death bed at the age of 33). At any rate, the move is disturbing, but misses making its point. If it were a bit more clear in its mission, it would be an exceptional movie. As it is, it leaves you confused and muddled.

There is little question, that this movie, will draw fans of Depp and Malkovich, not only to see these two seasoned actors for both their original and uniquely honed skills but also for their ability to fully absorb themselves in their character. It is actors like these, that raise the bar, continually, not as much for their fans, as much as an immense pride in their craft. This movie, which is an adaptation of a play written by London native, Stephen Jeffreys in 1994 (His latest play is Lost Land which premiered in the Steppenwolf, Chicago, in 2005). Although I am not sure how close the original play comes to this movie, it remains a success in its own right. The grainy, warm, muddy tones of the film at first seem hard to adapt to, but as the movie progresses, there are moments of magic stolen with available light, that are operatic and reminiscent of a moving Rebrandt. It is most important, to remember throughout, that this is an adaptation of a play. Such things that we are privy to cinematically, such as character build up, although would have been nice, are lost to the progression of the acts. Last statement, SAMANTHA MORTON, wonderful, brilliant, beautiful. I was blown away by this actress in Jesus Son, but she has stolen my heart with Libertine. Thats the way I see it

My husband and I have always been huge followers of the work of both Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, but didnt know what to expect from this film other that the anticipated brilliance from two of our favorite artists. Bad move! From now on, we will always be sure to research a films subject matter before viewing, in order to be well-informed audience members. I think we would have appreciated and understood this piece much better, had we known more about the topic. But, since we didnt, neither one of us cared much it. Even our love for Depp and Malkovich couldnt raise our overall opinion! So, I give this film two stars, and myself 1 star, as I believe it to be partially my fault for not knowing the history.

The films was strong, bold, and vulgar- GREAT! Does justice to the Restoration Era and the plays, and Stephen Jeffreys play and movie adaptaion are excellent! It is NOT for the weak of stomach, or the easily offended by overt sexual content or debauchery, drink and women of ill repute! But hey, thats why I wanted to see it! Although, Johhny Depp is always a good reason to catch a flick. Mmmm. He is incredibly wicked, grotesque and yet, you feel sorry for him. His excess and serial-fuk fest activities are what get him in the end, literally. He is disgustingly awesome. And his character is dark, can be light, but in his tradition of top-tier acting, he is really at his best when he is all those hues of grey in between. The female characters are equally brilliant, which leave the male counterparts, and friends of John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester, exposed and lacking. In fact, they are forgettable. Well, maybe not their wigs! The exception is John Malkovitch, who plays King Charles the Second, and who preceeded Depps dark and sexually luscious character of John Willmot- he is wonderful vulnerable and mature. So, I suppose you can say I enjoyed the film and am reading the Play because, yes, Im a geek, but also to see how much of the movie was embellishment, and what of the play will remain in the realm of the play. Excellent- but, it is a thinking film, so if you fancy the likes of big guns, exploding boats, fast cars and bikini clad vixens, this might not be the flick for ya. Busca otra pelicula... --kikaruda

The movie was good. Johnny Depp plays odd characters, but this one is the darkest of them all. All the characters were mezmerizing including the wonderful John Malkovich. My only advise is to watch it on an already dreary day...the entire film does not see one ray of sun. Rightfully so, it matches the moods of the characters and the lives they lived in the 1600s. In addition, the make-up, costumes and music are excellent! Johnny Depp extends his acting credibilites wonderfully!

This movie was great. It is a typical Johnny Depp movie and I really think a person has to sit through the movie in order to appricate the film. The film does contain some scenes that are not for young viewers but other than that its great. Also, the movie does warn views that Depps caracter will not be liked in the film. Depps caracter portrays a young man who is lost in sex, drugs and so on. I really think it has a deep message. WATch this film..

Yes, the other raters are correct - there are 2 very explicit sex scenes in this film as well as some profanity (the f word a half dozen times, as well as vulgar terms for reproductive parts). Aside from this maybe 15 minutes of discomfort, this is one of the most wonderful movies I have ever seeen. The camera work is amazing, the characters are inspired. Johnny Depp is fantastic as always and the two female leads were great as well - I definitely have two new favorite actresses. Its dark without being frightening, dramatic without a tired plot line - there are no stereotypes in this film, no Oh man this feels like Im watching insert film name Its definitely artistic (its categorized as an art biopic) but even my husband, who is a man-flick-only type of guy enjoyed it. Dont take the children, maybe even show up 15 minutes late, but this one is a must-see.
