Steve Barancik's well-crafted script takes all the usual suspect devices and tweaks them, making this the best film of its type from the 1990s. It's given stylish direction by John Dahl, who had already practiced with the atmospheric `Red Rock West.' There's an excellent cast, including Bill Pullman just before he turned into a good-guy leading man; the greatly missed J.T. Walsh as a smoothly amoral lawyer (is there any other kind?); Bill Nunn as a decent detective who makes one little mistake... And at ground zero, Peter Berg as lean slice of beefcake in upstate New York, dreaming of something bigger, better and, well, nicer. Into his life comes Bridget Gregory/Wendy Kroy, trailing more than the usual amount of baggage (and being trailed by more than the usual amount of men). Scrawny, cleavage-impaired Linda Fiorentino isn't everyone's dream of a sex symbol, but her take-charge physicality backs up her smarter-than-thou scheming. It's great work from an actress who's often been poorly used in Hollywood. There's no disrespect in saying that Fiorentino hasn't topped this performance, because few people have.
