Everything that doesnt fit within a very controlled environment is fixed or done away with. Remember Demolition Man with Stallone and Snipes? Well, that kind of world! It has repeated dream sequences of an Island getaway. The main characters find out that the Island getaway is really a hoax. In that light its like the Matrix and the wool being pulled over their eyes. I enjoyed Ewan McGreggor and Scarlet Johansson as the main characters. They fit well with ideal good looking characters that should enhabit an ideal world. Steve Buscemi is a strange looking cat and if he should be part of a future world he should be down in the engine room. Good place for the less than acceptable looking citizens. Jack La Lanne would fit wonderfully in this world with his health juices! And the way hes going he might just make it! Was this review helpful? Thats why its called SCI-FI!!! I suppose those of you who ask all of these intelligent questions all believe that someone actually built a dinosaur theme park on an island in the Pacific? I cant stand it when people have nothing better to do in their lives than pick apart movies. I think some of you live eat and breathe in order to watch these movies, and then hop online to pick them apart piece by piece. I LOVED this movie....every part of it. Good plot, good acting, all awesome. To those of you with the bad attitudes, please find another hobby. Was this review helpful? Its a shame this movie did not do good in the box office because it was wonderfull nonstop action and thrilling. The basic of the movie is there clones of people. And are told they get picked randon to go to the island were life is worth living but when Lincoln Six Echo plyad by Mcgreor finds there is no island he has to save Jordan Two Delta played by Scarlet Johnasson they have to run for ther lives. If you liked Ira Levins this Perfect Day you will love this movie. The acting is incredible, just incredible. Only very anal people will be shreading this movie over stupid not a big deal points. If you dont like this movie, I dare you to tell me a better one of this kind. I saw it 3 times. Loved it every time.
For the anal people, there is a bigger issue here that is the main point. Who cares about the semi truck or the sound of her scream. I thought the actors were beyond superb, if Ewan McGregor played the part of Chip in this perfect day it would have been the one instance where the book and the movie were both equally as good. Unless you think that Dumb and Dumber is your favorite movie,,, RENT THIS MOVIE NOW!!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 12/18/2005A review of The Island by cubanheat I admit, the films start is somewhat boring and drags on, but then the plot point is revealed, the audience goes Oh, I get it now and then the movie picks up. What I really did enjoy most about the film was the action sequence involving a chase on a freeway with a semitruck. Being a filmmaker myself, I cant get enough of it! I mean the lighting, the color correction, the stunts and use of digital compositing mixed together with the unique cinematography and editing truly makes the sequence come alive. If you like action movies I recommend you watch The Island, or at least the sequence on the freeway if anything! Was this review helpful? I watched 45 minutes of the movie and was bored to tears I turned it off. After 20 minutes I thought it was slow but gave more time hoping it would get better. It didnt. I am glad I did not see it in a theater. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 4 users found this helpful Posted: 12/16/2005A review of The Island by Mother_girl Can you please explain to me why a semi (driven by a person or a computer )would not stop immediately after losing its load? Or can you explain how two human beings could survive falling, oh lets say 50 stories, while riding on the inside of a huge exploding plastic and metal letter R and then land in a net at a construction site completely unscathed? Or how about this... a police car is driving down the street and gets hit by an armored car so hard that it completely breaks in two, yet our heroes jump out and start running away. Okay, its one thing to create a futuristic world where mankinds greed and materialism leads us to harvesting body parts from our own clones, but its another to create a world where the natural laws of physic no longer apply without providing some sort of an explanation. Suspension of belief can oly go so far. Was this review helpful? I thought it was going to be an o.k. movie with good special effects and a terrible story line...I mean "The Island" how much simpler can you get? But, as soon as it started, i was very interested. The institution, the lottery, the Xbox games! This was going to be an incredible movie. Many people thought it was confusing and didn't make any sense but....YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT.
Scarlett Johansson gave an amazing performance and so did Ewan McGregor. This movie proves that you dont need a big name actor to succeed. If anything...if you added Brad Pitt and Jessica Alba...I wouldn't have liked it!
In all...this was a great movie that I am looking forward to buying on DVD! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 8/22/2005A review of The Island by Tiff-Too The only reasons why I give this movie 4 stars and not 5 are the following reasons:
- It didn't make much sense that the truck that Lincoln and Jordon were throwing huge metal...(not sure what they were exactly, but they were big enoug to wipe out cars)..was still moving even though all that commotion was happening on it...
-I'm not a fan of action movies
Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor gave fantastic performances as the 2 clones. While some people say they didn't have enough star power to draw in a good audience, I would much rather see 2 beautiful people who CAN act than 2 "hot actors" who are just popular..not talented. The director showed total lack of creativity, only special effects kept me entertained during this everlasting movie. Way too long. Half of the movie I sat wondering what the heck is going on, another half watching explosions. If you're planning to see this movie, better stay at home Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 15 users found this helpful Posted: 8/12/2005A review of The Island by PortalTuna When someone sees the names Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor, the viewer thinks they are in for a good movie. However, in the case of "The Island" this was not the case.
After the viewer gets past of the excitement of what the future could look like, the fun is over. Product placement litters the screen in an attempt to sell beer, Mack trucks, and whatever other item they can throw at you.
Also besides trying to be sold products the viewer can see a right wing agenda being taught throughout. Is nothing safe anymore? Some of the issues the right wing uses to their advantage is stem cell research, cloning, and abortion. People who advocate for these practices are shown as #^!@s or slave owners.
The movie is also not very original reminding me of "The Matrix" to "Roots." However, "The Island" is not as good of a product.
One positive thing is the acting of Steve Buscemi who is funny and a great actor though shown as a character actor.
Questions remain unanswers and McGregor attempts to act against himself, which is clearly beat by Hailey Mills in "Parent Trap", but not as bad as Julia Roberts in "Oceans 12."
If you want to see this movie wait to rent and don't forget your Coca Cola and Act 2. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 8/11/2005A review of The Island by tabletennistud I am surprised to see that people are not flocking to see this movie, perhaps a lot of people dont even know about it, it was not advertised as much as it could be on tv. What drew me to the Island was the trailer which i saw twice before two other movies earlier in the summer, the trailer was good but not as good as the actual movie, i was expecting it to be good and I was still blown away when I left the theatre, despite the crappy movie theater I watched it in and despite the rediculous price of 10 bucks It was a great movie and worth it. Scarlett Johansson Is smokin' and that makes the movie 4 times better since she is in it. Was this review helpful? This film does have its flaws, but it's way, way out front of the two I just mentioned, and very well worth the price of admission. Looking at the critics who've slammed it, I'm tempted to conclude that their real problem with it is that its basic message of human dignity is perceived by them as a threat to social agendas regarding such things as stem cell research.
