He was a good Iron Giant. It was one of the best and coolest movies ever. Was this review helpful? Few months later that movie was again on and this time i watched it for almost 20min before moving on. During the same week it was again on re-run time so i sat through almost half of it. I guess the movie channel bought it for good money and they kept playing on and on every few months. I still remember that it was almost like a year when i finally watched the complete movie in one go and at that time i was convinced that this will for sure be the movie that i would watch with my kids.
Looking at it from the message point of view, i guess for elders taking time, showing interest & having that trust in the young one which matters to kid & for the kid being wild at heart, to go and discover whats there out in unseen world that they can start to love.
The movie is slow, colors are not that bright but it lets you flow with the theme. Was this review helpful? This could have been my hometown in Montana. While the movie is set on the east coast the main theme was the 1950's, Communism and the fact that "the bomb" was always on people's minds. I may have grown up mainly in the 1960's but we still had regular drills in which we were either told to hide under our desks and cover our head or (later) made to sit in the school hallways covering our heads as this was supposed to save us from "the bomb". Just seeing that Hogarth, his Mother, their junkyard-artist Korean War veteran friend and the rest had all of this in their backgrounds brought back vivd memories for me. The synopsis on the main page was fairly correct in describing the movie but had a few flaws. First of all Hogarth did not fish the robot out of the lake but saved him from electrocution when he fell on some live power lines at a transfer station. Also the synopsis omitted an important fact-the robot was a fighting machine but only for defensive purposes. When he understood death the robot wanted nothing to do with violence and aggression. Hence there was a mnor anti-gun message there. It also showed what could happen (or could have happened) if somebody just went off half cocked and decided to start blasting away without thinking about what was going on first. I was also struck by the similarity between this and the 1960's movie "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming." Especially with the scene when the robot rescues the two boys as they are falling from a high tower (in the "Russians" movie a boy falls from a church steeple and gets caught on the rain gutter and the Russian sailors along with the local townsfolk work together to save them).
I think this was a very well written and animated movie that both children and adults could enjoy and to date the only movie that Vin Diesel has done that I enjoyed. Was this review helpful? The marketing was terrible on this one - I've met so many people who've been turned off and never seen it, which is really sad to me. What you have is one of the most engaging, beautiful, memorable stories I've seen on film. Kids will enjoy it, but I don't think of it as a kid's movie - it's a movie for me (and I'm 35). The characters are more multidimensional and less cartoony than many "real" movies you're likely to see. It's gorgeous, it's genuinely sweet, and it's remarkably funny. And it's powerful. I've never failed to get a frog in my throat and a tear in my eye at the climax. I can't recommend many movies more unreservedly than this one. Was this review helpful? I thought it was too much of a "boy" film and thought I would find it very boring. I'm glad it was on the Disney channel one day or I'd have never given this movie a chance. It's definitely worth a place in anyone's movie collection. It's a beautifully animated work with a heart-felt story that has a great balance of drama and comedy. The characters are well thought out and multi-dimensional, and at times it's easy to forget they're cartoon characters at all. I would recommend this movie to anyone; it's entertaining for all ages. Don't judge this movie by it's title or it's cover. It's a lot more than it seems. :) Was this review helpful? Depicts the insane military man shooting at the much more powerful alien and thereby putting innocent civilians in harm's way. Kinda like War of the Worlds. Was this review helpful? It also taught us how society feels that the only way to achieve something is through war. Fortunately most of us are more inclined to belive that finding other alternatives such as listening work much better. Was this review helpful?
