Christianity doesn't make logical sense - that's why it's faith, not logic that has people believing.
The movie is slow-paced, but I really enjoyed it. The "Man in the Sky" scene cracked me up. Beyond the religious aspects of the movie, it spoke to the dangers of accepting anything on face value. We have minds capable of critical thinking - let's use them! Was this review helpful? This movie states you are a fool and a losers. Everything you hold as fundamental truth is a silly unbelievable fairy tale and a lie handed down by story tellers. Was this review helpful? The directors should have respected the tickey purchasers by placing warnings at the sales counter. The point of the movie was lost, as I found myself distracted by the audience and the negative reactions. The theatre became an uncomfortable environment very quickly. As an agnostic, I was not offended. The majority of the people in the theatre were beyond offended. CAUTION. Was this review helpful? Where people would rather believe in something unseen and unmeasurable than accept and appreciate tangible things around us on a daily basis. Eventually the movie took a turn for the worst when it became a corny romantic comedy. This is very disappointing coming from the writers and actors they have here. Do yourselves a favor and pass up on this one. Was this review helpful? The movie is an abomination, an obvious dig at faith and religion. It really wasn't even satirical or entertaining in the least bit. To say that the movie doesn't parody religion is a delusion. (Scene - sign in front of a church that says "really quiet place to think about the Man in the Sky." Also the pizza boxes where the rules of the man in the sky were written - obvious jab at 10 Commandments.)
Just another stinking "artsy" film by godless Hollywood.
Do not be deceived by the trailers on TV -the movie isn't remotely clever.
Pass the word on - it pokes fun at everyone who believes in a God. Was this review helpful? The movie was slow and not even that funny! Was this review helpful? I would watch this movie again if it was on a free channel and there was nothing else to watch. The concept was funny and the acting was ok. I've seen better from each of the actors. It seemed like this was just a paycheck for each one of them.
The message: Even though some movies have made attempts at telling people that Christianity is a lie, this one is not slight. It is a bold, loud statement. Atheists will love this movie. However if you have any belief at all you will find yourself being told that you are a looser.
I have to say that I just did not find it very funny regardless of the message. Was this review helpful? I don't think he meant to say God is a lie. That's taking the story too literally. I think rather it is a fable about the power of belief and faith and hope. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 10/3/2009A review of The Invention of Lying by Rosemary-Woodhouse I really wanted to see this movie because I love Ricky Gervais, but i was so disappointed. I thought that the movie "Ghost Town" was a wonderful movie and so I just assumed that "The Invention of Lying" would be just as great. I was wrong. I didn't walk out because I kept thinking that somehow it would redeem itself, and I'm a true believer that you cannot judge a film or a book unless you have finished it. As I watched the movie, I realized Mr. Gervais was implying that the existence of God is a lie. I have a problem with organized religion and people who do horrendous things in the name of the Lord, but this movie just didn't sit right with me. The basis of a higher power is FAITH. My faith in God is still intact, however my respect for Ricky Gervais is questionable. Was this review helpful? We walked out about half way though. It seemed as if the writers sat around a table thinking of ways to offend anyone who is part of the Christian faith.
Save yourself the time and money and see something else. Was this review helpful? Then the mocking of the Christian Faith started and my wife and I walked out after the next 29 minutues. BAD movie, don't go!!!! Was this review helpful?
