Brilliant. Every now and then a motion picture comes along which is a nearly perfect blend of acting, screenwriting, cinematography, soundtrack accompaniment, and direction. This movie, simply put, sets the standard by which all other films depicting the world of pool shooting will be measured.

Dated today. but a fine film all the same, with a cast that sparkles, bringing the smokey poolroom of yesteryear into your viewing range. The camera work is superb, especially on a sequence early on in the film. The scene is the first match between Eddie and Fats. Fats dominates the table, misses, and the camera proceeds to do a multi-leveled collage of Eddies run at the table. Totally mesmerizing, blending the shots at the table with camera shots of the onlookers together with a pace setting musical score. Being an accomplished shooter myself, I highly recommend this film to everyone and to pool shooting enthusiasts in particular. Enjoy!

The odyssey of a small-time pool hustler and his manager and the quest to beat Minnesota Fats. ";Fast"; Eddie Felson has a single minded ambition in his squandered life: to be able to beat the world's best pool shark, Minnesota Fats. Eddie unfortunately, has a weakness for drink and that; on top of his own stubborn desire, cheats him of constructive ambitions and a fleeting chance at love from a forlorn woman lost in New York. He discovers that the best he can do with his talent, is pass it from manager to manager and never get himself ahead. But Eddie's thoughtlessness is catching up with him and it takes everything short of holocaust to gain him the polish his talent so desperately needs and the horse-sense his survival lacks. Black-listed in Tinsel town Robert Rossen nevertheless puts this project together entirely on location. A first class ensemble and an oscar nomination for Newman highlight this tale of the sadder but wiser. Powerful enough to be sequelled in 1992 with ";The Color Of Money"; featuring Tom Cruise as the new-comer to the pool room and Newman reprising his role, finally nabbing that Oscar.

This is an exceptionally well-done movie. It is a film that has so many interpretations and so much character depth...wonderful. We have all come across people in our lives like a Burt, Fats, or Eddie. Great screenplay, directing and acting. Newman's best performance in my opinion and he's had quite a few stellar ones. Great DVD to own.
