Date  Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  The Hunger,rare and classic Vampire farePosted: 4/20/2004A review of The Hunger by RavenLady I saw this film years and years ago - and while I am not a slash and gash fan - there was something compelling about this film - I mean really compelling. It is a "quiet" film about violent acts of savagery - it scared the bejeebers out of me for that very reason - and it was artful, lovely and oddly sexy. All the performances were good, not oscar material, but better than average gothic fare. I believed all the characterizations - I was convinced and quite taken into the slick, classiness of the whole concept. And why not - I don't think this film will appeal to everyone , esp. not the under 30 crowds - there isn't too much ripping of flesh and crunching of bones and no one is flying through the air doing impossible vampire athletics or shrieking at the top of thier decayed lungs...rather, it just lulls you into the upscale mansion with it's gorgeous inhabitants - everything looks so normal at the door.. even as you step inside.. but in the cupollas and attics.. there are horrific secrets...for those who appreciate a great and slightly more intellectual approach to the gothic side of life.. You might want to cuddle up with someone you love.. and watch this with a cool pitcher of bloody Marys... Was this review helpful? But since no one in their right mind likes those, you might as well go ahead and pick something else to watch. The only really redeeming value of this rather heavyhanded movie is the bisexual subtext throughout the whole thing. Otherwise, it treats it's viewers like idiots by hammering in the same point over and over again as if to say ";do you get it yet?"; Well yes, I'm sure we do, and it's not impressive.
