It was the perfect grandiose introduction to grab the attention. it really stands out among other movies, which show the opening scene as some guy (@!@ in the shower.
sam rockwell was terrible he cheapened the whole production. he is annoyingly over-the-top and ruins the picture. he is the only reason I vote 4 and not 5 Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 2/4/2006A review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by All2true0 The movie was worth it just for the opening musical production number. Sam Rockwell was entertaining as he went through chewing up the scenary. Arthur Dent as a romantic made the movie more charming than the Arthur Dent of the BBC series, completely devoid of romance. The Vogons were perfect. The cartoon clips were well done and well placed.
And having said all that, unfortunately, if you had not read the books and not seen the BBC series, you would probably be lost.
For one thing, the multi-dimensional highly intelligent beings who built Deep Thought and having Deep Thought addicted to watching Saturday Morning cartoons was a nice touch and commissioned the building of earth to learn the meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything based on the number 42, just didnt make it as THE plot vehicle. The closest you got was when the mice were clobbered. If you didnt KNOW, it just didnt make any sense. Its no wonder people hated the movie and fell asleep.
The biggest loss though, was the scene that was left on the cutting room floor where Zaphod was kissing the vice president in the shed. It explains a lot about how she felt about Zaphod and why she acted as she did. The movie would have been so much better with just the 20 seconds or so that was dropped for no explicable reason. Its on the DVD in the cut scenes, but you have to look for it.
The ending was great! Talk about second chances. No matter the earth was destroyed by a bumbling charming idiot who signed the destruction decree with Love and Kisses without knowing what it was a further commentary on officious bureaucracy. We had a spare! All was put right. And nobody was ever the wiser except the small group who lived through it all.
If only a few scenes were tweaked a bit.... Was this review helpful? I like British comedy but this movie does not deserve to fall under that genre. And for those of you who actually liked this movie there are numerous mental health and drug treatment programs available to you. Was this review helpful? maybe if your on drugs or are VERY drunk you'll find this movie funny. but even a semi intelligent person will find this movie boring. Was this review helpful? I lost interest in it about a half hour into the movie and turned it off about half way in. I am glad I did not see the movie at the theater. Was this review helpful? Who gave this movie four stars??? It was the WORST move I have EVER SEEN!!! I am quite sure that Douglas is turning in his grave.
His BEAUTIFULLY written four book "trilogy"..LOL is absolutely bastardized by this montrosity of a film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have twenty year olds writing your critic's reviews?? Do they have NO CLUE as to what the books originally intended?
I personally feel (and will tell all I know and anyone else that will listen) that you as a "critics" listing and review have absolutely NO business doing so.

It was charming and the actors were good picks. As a huge Adams fan, I dwelt a lot on how it compared to the books. It wasn't THAT much like the books, but I'm willing to forgive and enjoy it because it was truly in the spirit of Douglas Adams. I like to think he would've appreciated this film.
I'm most impressed by how many Americans I see reviewing this film who, having never before written using an adverb, are now silly with them. Good job Adams. Was this review helpful? This movie was as stupid as they get. I watched people get up and walk out and wished I was going with them. I kept waiting for it to get better, it never did. Was this review helpful? They should have paid me to watch this move. I mean a lot more then the 4.50 it cost to see it. They should have paid me for the popcorn, soda, candy and at least a 200.00 to sit in a chair and watch this garbage. If my 11 year old son was not there I would have left after the first 15 minutes. Yuk! 2 hours of my life I can never regain! Was this review helpful? Some people complained the movie bashed religion well it was suppoused to Douglas Adams was an atheist. any way i highly recamend this movie to any Scifi or comedy fan. Was this review helpful? I could not wait for it to end, best part was the first 10 minutes and the credits. I would have left at the start if the ticket wasn't so much. What a waste of film and talent. I thought it was really well done for what they could actually put into a movie. So much of it was missing though, that having read the book I was able to fill in the blank spots. Still, I was let down when the movie ended -- I just wanted more -- could actually have sat there another 2 hours!
Recommended only for those who don't mind actually thinking while being entertained. Subtle British humour! Loved it! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 5/24/2005A review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by SidTheInvisible I've seen it 5 times already and I still laugh every single time. I even learned the words to the opening song. I found it to be hilarious. Every one I took to see it found it to be hilarious with the exception of 3 people... And I have seen it with about 12 people. Everyone who thinks that this movie $#^!ed is crazy! The story line didn't follow the book exactly, but if you took the time to notice Douglas Adams was one of the writers of the script. How exactly can you find the book funny, the series funny, and the radio series funny and not find this funny?! This came straight from the man himself!!!!! This is one of the best movies I have seen all year. Definatly. :D Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
