Without showing one shot of the ghosts, this movie teases all of the primitive impulses of fear, terror and dread that modern life has suppressed in us. The director has removed all of the possible distractions that color and scenery impose on the viewer. It is as if we are looking at a nightmare and living through it at the same moment. In the bedroom scene, when the covert sexual overtones come to the forefront, a confluence of shadows and noise coerces the observer’s fears into creating a monster in his or her own mind. Much like a fearful child trying to escape from a dark bedroom, the shadows contain a horror too grotesque for the retina to identify. This is film is not a horror classic as much as it is a classic separate class of film, the “fear classic. If you live alone in an old house, rent this film and watch it a friend’s place. If you watch it at home, you will run out of house screaming for your mother. Was this review helpful? I was with my girlfriend and I learned that this was the type of movie to take a girl to. She was scared more than me if that was possible.
Something else I learned. The less you see of a Monster, the scarier it can be. The mind is where terror dwells, not some cheap special-effects trick up on the screen.
If you havent seen it, I suggest you get your girfriend or wife and snuggle up together in a darken room and prepare for a good old-fashion haunted- house movie. Was this review helpful? It has so many layers, so many fears and feelings, I just hope you get a chance to see it.I must admit I've seen it a number of times and always, always find it fresh and fascinating.
