The Coast Guard has never been given enough credit. Kevin Costner and Mr. Heard and the guy who played "Skinner" - I think his name was McDonough - were great - and the other guys (the rest of the staff at 'A' School - were the real deal.
Ashton - I'm not a fan - I understand they needed some supposed young hearthrob - i.e., Richard Gere in an Officer and a Gentlemen - but Ashton is a poor excuse. He may be a fine person - but as an actor - if he were around the corner I wouldn't go see him. I loved the movie - Kevin Costner would make paint drying look interesting. Was this review helpful? People are fascinated by the place. And rightly so. But the Big Bear state is a tough nut to crack on film, and although the script behind this movie has many fine qualities, the characters in it ultimately fail to make any meaningful connection to that great land. And the viewers gut-level desire to draw close to, and learn more about Alaska and Alaskans, remains unrequited.
Kodiaks' robust history contains a number of mind-blowing stories of survival and adventure that took place during the boom-days of the King Crab fishery there. And the wild, go-to-hell lives of the commercial fishermen who lived the life, died at sea (44 in one year), haunted the bars (they ran 24 hours a day), and frequented the whore-houses (the last brothel in Kodiak closed its' doors in 1984) are equally as fascinating.
But Kevin Costner can still lay claim to the "Brass Balls Award" for his part in this one. There isn't another actor in the world today even close to his stature who would have been gutsy enough to set aside his look-good long enough to wrap himself in such a demanding role. Yes, a Costner lover for a long time, but he was great in the movie. A little bit of fun, a little bit of cute, a lot of seriousness, and yes, a lot of tears. The first time I saw it at the theatre and had no idea of the ending and I left feeling like he was going to be found. So, months later I rented it again with the intentions of sitting in my living room and being able to let the water works flow - however, I STILL was waiting for him to be found, or to pop back up out of the water. Really my first Ashton Kutcher who I thought did a good job. Though hes definately not in the same league as Costner, I thought he did a decent job with his character. Cant wait for more Kevin Costner movies.
Thank you Mr. Costner!!!! Was this review helpful? the movie was all about being in the coast guard and proving yourself. having to get over your past and being able to work and performe.
the movie is not worth renting or buying, def worth watching on tv.

Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 1/30/2007A review of The Guardian by exairdale0 I sat in that flight mechanic seat for 5 years in the coast guard. I loved this movie because its the only movie about the CG thats accurate. I was going to my training the same time the rescue swimmers were so Ive seen first hand what their training is like and the movie summed it up pretty well. When he finally got out of swimmer school and sent to his first station, I was surprised that they filmed the ACTUAL station, Kodiak because I was there too. There is a very good bond between the rescue swimmer and their flight mechanic and I believe they showed that as well. I gave this 5 stars even though Im not a Kutcher fan. I also liked it because I was stationed with some of the people in the movie. Just wanted to say that its a great movie and very true to life! Was this review helpful? This movie was inspirational, touching, tear-jerking and so many other things i would need about 4000 characters max to say it all. i hardly ever cry at movies. the only other movie that made me cry was charlie and that was only a tear or two. this movie....holy cow. here come the water works. no im not ashamed. the emotion Costner and Kutcher put into their acting was amazing. and the time wasnt that horrible. when you go to a movie ready to watch it and have fun, not look for every single thing that goes wrong you hardly notice the time. come on people! so anyway, great movie, one of my all-time favs! It was an incredible action flick, with modest dialouge and story-line. Keeping in mind real people do those things in real life, everyday, is breath taking. Heart grabbing emotional ending. Left the theatre and still thinking about the whole movie a week later. (Not to mention Ashton Kutcher looks really good.) Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/1/2006A review of The Guardian by Anonymous Ive seen about 15 films this year and this one tops the list. Action, drama, good story line, and educational. Im not a Kevin Costner fan but his performance was maybe the best hes done yet. Starts out strong with the opening scene and then slows down, but it has to to set up a strong finish. The critic rating just proves they are out of touch with reality. Five different people I know have gone to see this and all have come back with the same reaction as I did. You WILL get your moneys worth, and I rarely say that.

I am so glad I saw all the reviews on here with practically all 5 stars. Im so glad I finally took a chance and saw this movie. It was great. It made me so proud of our Coast Guard and people that have such awesome courage and stamina. The sea and waves on the big screen was just amazing and frightening. I cant believe people do this for a living. It kept my interest all the way through. There were funny parts and I felt really close to all the characters, even the ones who were only on the screen for a few minutes. I guess thats what great writing and acting does for a movie. You really have to see this one. Dont listen to the critics. This is a great movie. You wont be sorry you took a chance to see it. Was this review helpful? This movie was indeed one of the best movies of the year, everything was balanced and nothing was exagerated or fantasized. Kevin Costner once again did an awesome job and Ashton Kutcher followed closely. At no time did the movie feel boring or drag on, it had much emotion and all the elements often missing in todays movies. I am glad I went to see it and recommend it to anyone who thinks a fireman has the toughest job out there... excelente!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 10/26/2006A review of The Guardian by scooby_590 Currnently being enlisted Coast Guard (Active and Reserve) for over 17 years, I was excited that a movie was finally being placed on the big screen with the detailed life of the Coast Guard. I also had thoughts of a not so good personal critique. It is obvious to me that the director paid attention to detail in this movie. I thought it was very well written and very accurate. I have been in search and rescue for 16 of my 17 years, all from boats vice helicopters, and I can tell you that Aviation Survivalman is indeed one of the most difficult positions to have and hold in the Coast Guard. I watched this movie the first time by myself so I would not annoy my wife if the facts were too far off and to my surprise it was very accurate so I took my family the following week. I did not care for the ending. The chances of a hoisting cable parting like that are slim to none, as it was just another Costner dramatized scene--watch The Postman and you will see what I mean.

It has everything you could ask for in a movie. It has action, romance, bravery, and of course sexy Ashton Kutcher! What more could you want. Obviously i am one of Ashtons biggest fans BUT even if i wasnt, i would have enjoyed this movie just the same. I cant wait to own it. Demi you are one lucky woman! Was this review helpful?
