Growing up in the fifties as a Marine Brat I was amazed to see how closely the movie followed real life. Fathers away from home for long periods of time. Many secrets about were they had been and what they had done. Fathers called on the phone late at night. Leave with the special equipment of the trade. And to leave for unknow duration or location. My only goal as a chld was to become the same.

This movie is the worst 3 hrs ive ever wastede.honest to god the it didnt have a plot. I had to read the sypnosis AFTER i saw the movie with my mom who didnt understand it either. i found in the action genre section at the movie store. ive seen romantic comedies with more action than this. i can normally understand movies alot better than anyone else. for instance i saw the bourne identity(great movie) with my friends and had to explain it to them them twice. this movie made me openmouthed. the only reason it deserves 1 star instead of none is because angelina jolie is hot.

This film did not fulfill my expectations I seek when decide to spend my limited time on earth to watch a movie. I see mostly one star ratings and conclude that intelligent or not, we mostly view movies to escape everyday boredom and be entertained. The Good Shepard was more a lesson in history and a chance for those seeking to tell everyone else how intelligent they are by rating it high. As another reviewer mentioned The Constant Gardiner, I was reminded of all the highly rated boring movies I have been led to believe were good. I think many critics feel obligated to sound intelligent by giving high marks to these type of movies. I think most of us want the Pulp Fiction, the Abyss or T2 type escape from reality when we choose to waste our time. You can label us stupid sheep. To that I say bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

This movie is trying to explain to all the sheep (you America) why you can cut the lawn or go boating with your family (remember that line). This movie has serious depth, slow yes, but I love history. People always assoicate the CIA with exciting hollywood drama and thrills, but what the old master done this time was right on the money. They showed you the slow, burning, aching and depressing life of working for the agency at its beginning and even now I would assume. This is what great movies are made of, it takes IQ to realte and understand why your not speaking Russian, German or Jap. This movie was just a flash snap shot of America in a nano second and most of you keep saying it was three hours long. When you lay or head down tonight, thank those people involved with protecting the flock no matter how you feel about your government. Now, get in line sheep and march...because you really dont want to know the truth if it was told to you and BE glad of that. Go to your 9 to 5, wash your SUV, eat that burger, kiss your family, have that beer, put up your Christmas lights,...blah blah blah. You get it now? Dirty little secrets and lies can cause a nation to crumble without the Good Shepards standing over the flock. My time is short, I have a rendition appointment. What are you thinking now? Thats the point this movie was trying to make. Did I help all the one star people out there see a pinhole of light in the tunnel. The true flock of sheep rated this movie a 1 star...think about that.

I went to see this movie at the theatre, and we had to leave half way thru before one of us died of boredom. I was so so so disapointed. Robert De Niro is my favorite actor, but this movie was so slow and...... boring. No other word to describe it. I wouldnt recommend anyone see this movie, even if you dont have to pay for it, its not worth the 3 hours of your life!!!!!

THE WORST TORTURE WOULD BE TO HAVE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE AGAIN. THINK OF THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND THEN TAKE SOME OF THE GOOD PARTS AWAY. YOU ARE LEFT WITH THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

Thie tune kube fir tgus nivue was frin 1930s to 1961. The college aged caracters did not age one day during the entire movie. It wa disjointed and jumped back and forth from the 30s to the 60s with no visual differencein appearance. The plot was good, but the acting was poor. It would have been better if it had started in the 30s and went right on through to the 60s. The audio was horrible. During a concert, the two people having a dialogue could not be heard over the singing. This ws occuring throughout the movie. Granted whispers were necessare, but drownding out the vital information was obscene. I would not recommend this movie to anhone. Not even someone I disliked.

The other reviews are right at how long and slow paced this is. Its like going grocery shopping with someone. In fact - Id rather do that than go see this again. Ive only walked out of two movies ever (the other being Boogie Nights), but after two hours - Id had enough and gave up on the hope of it getting any better. Terrible. Terrible, Terrible. -)

Pretty slow moving all the way through this very long movie. If you your looking for excitment take a yo yo with you when you see this flick. Highly over rated movie to say the least. Too bad with all the big names involved.

Never underestimate the supidity of the viewing public, yes, the film was slow and tedious , hello folks welcome to the world of the CIA. If you what to see things blow up go see the lastest Jerry Stupidhiemer movie. This film was a look into the beginning of a secret world and the end of one mans conscience. Everyone in the movie was wonderful and if you couldnt keep up with the dialog or plot then go see Happy Feet, No what a minute that might be alittle quick for you all, go see the new texas chain-saw massacre......

This movie had a different slant. It had many of the features and weaknesses many of the other reviewers complained about -- long, difficult to follow, flash-backs, mumbled words, dark backgrounds, Damons demeanor, unanswered questions, short performances by known stars... but, for me, I didnt sleep or doze at all! In fact I spent most of my time trying to figure out what was happening. Upon reflection here are some of the aspects which I feel were the movies strengths... It was politically historical... Bay of Pigs failed... why... who contributed... The Cold war was in full swing whiile I was the USAF, in the 60s to 80s, and witnessed these values. The Communists were real enemies... and it came to pass the Communist empire crumbled... Insight into the CIA then... the dirty business of intelligence and counter intelligence, and those who survived in the business, but perhaps never loved it... It was a tradgedy for the Good Sheppard for he did indeed have only America as he worked in it as his all consuming god... and his sacrifices were great... was America better for it? Robert de Niro directed... does it reflect how he thinks, emotes? Angelina Jolie... thought she played her role super... but not one I would have picked for her... Matt Damon... he played it the way it was intended... would you have liked him for a neighbor, friend? Anyway... it was a great big mixed bag of likes and dislikes... but written and performed well enough to be enduring... My thumb is up!

I am boondogled. I read each of the reviews yesterday (all of them) and saw the film last night. I really expected it to be what you all said, hard to follow, something to sleep through...a bummer. I was fascinated! The story was superb, the flashbacks came in order and were easy to follow, the extreme sadness of Edward and his life since he was a boy was tumultuously clear. I even caught on to the last bit about burning the letter. I have no clue what the majority of you slept thru. My companion wouldnt even go to the restroom for being so enthralled. Even those that liked it, said they needed clarification on a few things. It was plain, full of emotion life story of a man who had to live up to his honor at the price of everything he loves and should have. I am a hard grader and usually wouldnt give anything a 5 star, but this was put together very well. It is a character study and portrays the full emotion of a life spent living for the rest of the world.

Went to see this movie last night. Fell asleep a couple of times. What I dont understand is how the overall review posted 1-15-07 is 4 stars when you review all the posts (77), you will find mostly 1 stars ratilngs. How did they come up wilth an overall rating of 4 stars. Very hard to follow the plot. Most of the verbage was in wispers and very hard to understand. Music drowns out the words.

if i could, i would give this movie zero stars!! my husband and i are both fairly intelligent people and we still couldnt really understand what was going on...could it be because there is very little meaningful dialogue?? the story, script, directing and especially the acting (this was the worst ive ever seen matt damon) was truly horrific. i normally can see some value in every movie - even talladega nights had some merit - but this was truly awful. i dont know what movie the critics reviewed, but it surely wasnt this one!

This is the first time i am in agreement (completely as a matter of fact) with MSNBCs critic. One thing to ad in the prespective of the movie anyway, they made it appear as sincere saddness when Edward approached his son after his fiance was murdered. But just prior to that Edward was asked do you want her in your family hummm...during the 60s humm...... Should have been called the gate keeper instead of the good sheperd.
