The Golden Compass was definetly one of the better films of 2007, even if not many critics agreed. Dakota Blue Richards gives a delightful performance debut, possibly giving Dakota Fanning a run for Her money? Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig also starred together in this years The Invasion and both did a fantastic job in The Golden Compass. Eva Green stars as The Witch in which She can also be seen co-starring opposite Daniel Craig in 2006's Casino Royale. This movie has a lot of likeable characters such as Lyra, her Daemon(Pantalaimon), and Lorek(the bear). I thought this film was more violent and suspensful then The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Which is a good thing. I thought the CGI work was better as well. The Bear at times looked a little fake but during the battle between the two Bears near the end of the film looked VERY real. I actually gasped at that part. I have yet to read the book, but I heard that they were pretty spot on with following the storyline. The Golden Compass wasn't AMAZING but it was good enough for a B-

It had great acting, amazing visual effects and a great plot. It had nothing to do with religion so go and see it.

This movie was terrible. I haven't read the books. I thought it would be very in-depth and visually stunning with great acting. Well, the visual effects were very good but the rest was not. The story just totally cut off at the end. BAM and the movie was done. I guess that is supposed to leave you hanging for a sequel but I felt like I had totally wasted almost two hours of my life. Maybe children would like it better but as an adult I was seriously disappointed. Don't waste your time or money seeing this movie.

It didn't have as much action as I thought it would. The best part was with the Polar Bears. Over all the movie is ok, but it's slow. Just too slow. This is definitly not a movie for young children. I'd say 9 and above. I wouldn't go see this movie again. I hope, if they do make a second movie, it's better than this. Thanks.

I think it was a good movie, they could have gone into a bit more detail, but over all its a good movie, I read all three books and absolutly loved them, I was so excited when I heard they were making it into a movie, but keep in mind that the first book was only to tell the plot, its the second and third book is what really gets into the story of her adventure into other worlds, I will be waiting for the sequel.

I just saw this movie and loved it. I have not read the books so I have nothing to compare it to. However, I was given the set for Christmas and intend to read them now. It's so refreshing to see the light shown on the dark and exposed for the light it is and the light shown on the light for the dark it is!! Good and evil are based on personal beliefs, what may be evil for one may not be evil for another and likewise with good. The world is as it is and isn't black and white, everybody's box is a little different.

BAD. If you read the book don't bother seeing it. It will make you mad. It was less than 2 hours long. They could of done this movie right and made it a lot of longer plus they cut out the whole ending of the book and left the movie with no ending so that you had to see the next movie evening if this one *#$@s. If you havent read the book they don't explain anything to you. You might see it as entertaining but you don't understand what is really going on. you dont understand Dust or the prophecy about lyra. The ending will irritate you. When the movie ended I heard alot of booing and angry cries. They ruined an amazing book and now I have to see the next movie because I have to not because I want too. This could of been a great movie if someone else did it. I would suggest since this movie bombed I would hire some one else to do the next one.

Hi all, This movie is about a girl, Lyra, who has been prophesied by the witches to be the One. The movie ends fittingly in my opinion, in the air ship sailing off in to the horison, giving the audience there is more to come. What I like most about this movie is the fact that the Majesterial seek world domination and control through religion and manipulation (brainwashing). This is exactly what happens in our world today with violent consequenses. What this movie asks is for everyone to listen to their Soul and Seek Truth. Also, I love how characters which we today would judge as evil, are in fact those who are fighting for our freedoms....i.e. the Gyptions (Gypsies) and the Witches. There are great fight scenes and action. The CGI is fantastic and I was convinced the world was real. All the Daemons which accompany all Humanoids as their souls are fantastic and realistic. Unlike Human souls which are inside us, their souls are manifest outside their bodies as animals. I higly recommend all people to see this movie and judge it for themselves. Perhaps the concepts are quite complex, even for adults, but for those that a free thinkers..... you will enjoy it.

would like to preface this message, in order to keep from coming across as an angry old man bantering on at a poor, defenseless kid, by saying that I am fifteen years old. To the previous review from a 12-year-old, i must say your ignorance is breathtaking. It is obvious your parents have pinholed you into religion without any real reason why. Your arguments against this movie are simply based upon the fact that you think God is great. Look around you, kid. God *^*#s. Philip Pullman puts things right where they are. His ideals and writings are revolutionary, and he's not too much of a wuss to publish them. Now that I've effectively made you cry, I would like to critique your review. First of all, if you're going to attack another's grammar, ("God is spelled with a capital G.") then make sure your own is infallible first. secondly, before you throw something into the 'junk' pile, EXPERIENCE IT! I ask you this not to condemn you, but to give you enough insight so that you don't sound like so much of an idiot the next time you review something. This movie, by the way, is absolutely amazing. The cast is all-star including Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. The scenery is as vivid as Narnia's, and the armored bears kick butt. Good movie. Go see it. (and by the way, the scene where they obviously kill God at the and of this book... doesn't happen. in the last book of this series, an angel who is an impostor taking the title of God DIES OF HIS OWN FRAILTY. Get it right freaks.)

I'm a 47 year old grandmother and I highly recomment this movie. After seeing it, my husband and I immediately called our daughter telling her to take our grandchildren (9 yr and 6 yr) to see it. She did and the kids loved it. It was visually beautiful and wonderfully acted. I haven't read the books but now I will.

When I first read His Dark Materials I thought to myself "this would make a good movie!" When I found out that The Golden Compass was coming I cried I was so exited. Some people say that this movie has no substance and you know what I think? They clearly have NO appreceation for the word WONDER.

I agree with the last writer, i personally have not seen this movie, but i have read all the books and agree with the "another world" theory, well fact as i prefer, you need to read all the books to finally figure out the true meaning, don't think that the god in the story is the same as our God, its totally different, like Siva or Vishnu in Hinduism. its a great fantasy trilogy and should be treated as such, the controversy around the books is based only on opinion, i guaruntee you none of those who critisize them(like my parents) have ever even read the books, they base everything on a false synopsis from a person who must be an absolute idiot who somehow on The Lords green Earth didn't understand the books or didn't read all of them. Trust me, don't let what you've heard change your mind, go see it and maybe read the books, the Christian values will reveal themselves to you.
