Posted: 6/24/2007A review of The Fountain by QLellowhead
I'm not saying this was a horrible movie, but it was just SO weird. The main story I did find very good but there were just a few parts where I really felt like I was high or something because it was just so strange. The idea for the movie is actually very creative and the directors could have made something great of it, but honestly, they were just a gew nut jobs and had to make the weirdest piece. I would almost say to see this movie just for the experience, but I think

You can choose to make anything out of this movie, but you might enjoy it better if you keep it simple. For me at least, the story revolves around a doctor whose wife asks him to write the last chapter of her book before she dies. The book, and their lives, is enriched by her research into the Spanish Queens quest for the fountain of youth and the lessons drawn from it. While others choose to view the characters as existing in three different points of time, it is much better to think of the doctor and his wife as the central point of the story. The quest for the fountain of youth is to watch how the wifes book unravels and how the doctor struggles to come up with a climactic conclusion, while the futuristic floating Bahaist is a representation of his neglect to finish the book amidst his anguish, which he first tries to get rid of with not so helpful distractions. Only when he realizes that completing the book lets his wife live forever, figuratively speaking, does the movie end. The movie would have been perfectly enjoyable had the CGI been kept to a minimum. Instead, the producers try to send across a message using graphics rather than acting. The movie reminds me of Star TrekThe Movie. They both lose the story in unnecessary visual effects, so much so that if it were not for the beautiful love story, the graphics would have turned the movie into a recruitment video for the Ananda Marga. Entertaining enough, though, if youve got nothing to do. Otherwise, go watch something else.

this was absolutely the worst movie ive ever seen. i completely disagree with everyone who says it is a work of art. it is stupid and boring. i almost fell asleep during the first half hour. i mean come on, who enjoys watching a man floating around in a bubble talking to a hairy tree. it was weird and even though everything made sense at the end, the entire movie leading up to the ending was horrible. the ending was also extremely weird. the guy had flowers growing out of his body for goodness sakes. unless your one of those artsy people who likes very strange movies that the rest of the public hates then you will hate this movie. dont waste your time. i just dont understand why critics give such a horrible movie like this 5 stars and other movies that are actually good only one star- ridiculous

Love Story on Acid! I have to admit, I actually liked this movie. A bit on the strange side but very emotional and visual. ( My girlfriend cried all the way through it. ) Go see it while its at the movies for the big screen effect!

This movie belongs in a museum. While I quite agree that the movie is visually stimulating, and the story quite thought provoking, for what the movie touts itself to be - a science fiction journey through time and space - it falls completely short of any type of satisfying conlclusion. While the artsy and intellecual set no doubt rave over its originality and use of art and abstract thought, as a movie it, well, it was awful. I understand the husbands grief and struggles, being so close to a cure only to lose his wife, and I understand the wifes journey through her illness and ultimate acceptance through her stunning journal, and even the entire Hugh Jackman in a bubble was possibly understandable, as that is where he was emotionally, but I think the whole bubble thing was over the top and, quite honestly in my humble opinion, ridiculous. So all you arty and intellectual folks can call me an underacheiver in my appreciation of film as art, but if I wanted art and stimulating conversation over its abstract meaning, I would go to a museum or a gallery. I have nothing against arty films, I am only greatly disappointed that Hollywood had to deceive to get an audience. This is obviously not a mainstream movie, so shame on the marketing team for making it appear to be. And shame on me for falling for it.

I saw the movie, then had a snack and decided to go back in and see it again. I thought it was one of the most beatiful film works of art ever. Just the scene towards the end in the bubble where he is on his knees with the Queen touching his head was over the top. The music was fantastic. I am a real fan of anything about immortality like Tuck Everlasting or Lord of the Rings. I dont worry about non-linear movies. When I am driving, or doing anything else for that matter, I think about events from the past and sometimes I realize that I was transported temporarily (I havent run off the road yet). Any good work of art brings up questions, it all depends on the viewer as to whether they want to look inside for answers. I am a little puzzled as to why anyone would name call or criticize another viewer for liking or disliking this or any other enigmatic creation. Maybe this movie will start a new religion or something. One little detail about the ring I dont get. He set it down when he scrubbed for surgery, then it disapeared. I looked carefully the second time for any clues as to where it went, but I didnt see any. If he had not lost it he probably would not have puntured his ring finger to make the black ring which seems to have given him immortality. He found it again on the moss in the bubble and made the connection to the Queen. But where did it go in the 21st century? Film makers must have fun with stuff like this. I will probably go see it again with my wife. Even though she doesnt like science fiction, I will not have to try to explain it to her anymore. Steve S

Not everyone can appreciate beauty. Its power incites both hate and love (and even haters of The Fountain admit that it is beautiful). And I wont go so far as to proclaim that lovers of this movie are spiritually, perceptually, intellectually and aesthetically superior to those miserable wretches who didnt like it......well, maybe i will. But Ill try to HELP those wretches by providing this PHI---The Golden Mean----a number best expressed by showing the equality between the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part and the ratio of the Whole to the larger part. Perhaps the movies creator never thought of this while creating the movie but I doubt it considering he made Pi and then put a lot of gold into this movie. This is not a movie of explicit answers. It is a movie of ratios, contrasts, co-existences and relations. Man and woman, science and art, career and love, life and death, romanticism and spiritualism. When its all said and done what is the meaning.?..the intended meaning? well, you have Fountain---a source or point of origin(not necessarily the fountain of Youth since that is not the name of the movie. It could be God, the source of all life or just the title of a story). And you have Creo, the name revealed on the gravestone at the end. Creo means I believe in Spanish and I create in Latin. SO WHICH IS IT!? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? ok, ok, Ill tell you. It all means this Auream quisquis mediocritatem Diligit, tutus caret obsoleti Sordibus tecti, caret invidenda Sobrius aula --Horace

It left me speechless, a beautiful interpretation of death. This is not for everyone, it will not entertain everyone, I believe that is not its purpose. It leaves you wondering why because Aronofsky wants you to leave thinking that way. This is artwork not a mere entertainment stunt. It is Aronofskys interpretation of what death is, hes not trying to persuade anyone. He is displaying how he feels about death. It is a great visual and musical accomplishment and well thought provoking. Please dont see this movie if you want something that is MADE to please you, because youll be disappointed. I think this movie is refreshing because of how truly original it is. Go Kronos Quartet

I waited for this movie to come out and even saw it by myself because I couldnt find anyone to go with me. I was sadly dissapointed that the story wasnt more mainstream. They put the movie under Science Fiction when it should have been labled under, Acid Trip. It ebbs and flows into what the viewer believes is past and present. Dont get me wrong, it was visually beautiful and Hugh was amazing in the crying scences..you really felt his pain and his anxiety to find a cure for his wife. My perception on the storyline was that there was this guy who is a scientist struggling to find a cure for his wifes brain tumor and while he is in the midst of this struggle he is reading his wifes book. That explains the merging of the two storylines. Her wanting him to finish her book is her way of allowing him to greive her loss and come to HIS own understanding of death and what lies beyond.

Posted: 12/3/2006A review of The Fountain by Vivianmeow
Its not the typically Hollywood movie. If youre about to spend 8 to see this movie, bring your open mind and patiance to this piece of artwork. Please dont compare this movie with the current Holiday blockbuster movies. If you dig deeper than just a glance, youd understand the meaning behind this story. Its not about physical immortality, its the beauty of spirtual immortality. Life is an endless cycle the end will be a new beginning. Hugh Rachel are superb, theyre daring to be taken so many close up shots. It made their love story very emotional impactful to me. I havent seen this type of film in a while, beautifully done.

Posted: 12/1/2006A review of The Fountain by KRitic0
The Fountain is aptly named water bubbling and spouting in different directions as it makes its way up to the top then slowly falls down pulled by gravity--ever changing yet somehow still the same...just as the lives of Izzie and Tom--their stories are repeated across time. Which one happens first...what causes what is all irrelevant when you examine the fouintain of their lives. Their two souls are the water that flows across and throughout time only to be recycled again and again. Do their lives mimic the storylline of a book which Izzie wrote? Does the water at the bottom of a fountain determine the patterns at the top? I have never seen this to be so. Through time all eventualities will play themselves out as they do in the movie and as they do in a fountain... of course all within the limits imposed by the universe-- imposed by God. These two souls will play for eternity, but they will never escape. A beautiful film...which touches upon the concept of all time existing at once all space connected, all events interrelated, and all possibilities coming into fruition, giving life to a circular universe revolving withing a circularity of time. So beautiful a movie! A mimesis of an even more spectacular burning sword flaming above our blue skies. KRitic

Liked the love story but it was just too confusing. At the end youre just sitting there like is that it???... What tha??? I feel like I really wasted my time and money seeing this movie!

I have always been able to find some shred of enjoyment from most movies...this was the exception. I have never left a movie feeling more cheated and confused. The entire movie I kept waiting for all of the nonsense to somehow fall into something that would make sense. Nope..didnt happen. Dreadful does not begin to describe this film. Save yourselves the pain of sitting through an hour and a half of Hell!!
