Posted: 10/23/2006A review of The Family Stone by FirmJirpy
...by sham I mean that, as many reviewers have pointed out, this movie was presented to the public as being a sort of warm hearted Christmas comedy with quirks, foibles and perhaps a few dramatic moments along the way... It doesnt take long before you realize that there is little to no comedy and loads of depressive, irritating and painfully awkward scenes. By agenda I mean that they make no bones about promoting an unnecessarily excessive liberal viewpoint thats not even consistent. While this open-minded family absolutely fawns over their son and his boyfriend, neatly packaged with a hat trick of being gay, deaf, AND involved in an interracial relationship - as well as being fully supportive of his efforts to adopt a child with his partner... in a matter of minutes after meeting their other sons soon-to-be fiance(SJP) for the first time, they become cold, callous, judgemental, nasty and rude. Why? Well... because shes a hard-working, professional, polite, principled and most likely conservative woman whos nerviously trying to fit in and make a good impression with her possible future in-laws. These cool Stone parents get high with their children and the mother even talks openly with their new horrified guest about her daughter getting her cherry popped. Of course, they mothers dying so youre not really allowed to dislike her - and yeah... they go WAY out of their way to try make you cry abou that... God help any real cancer patients of their loved ones who got ered into watching this moive.... It gets worse - within about 24 hours, the sons end up falling in love and swapping partners with the sisters because, ya know... if it feels good it is good - and after some understandable albeit ignornant primal male conflict... well, they all end up perfectly happy as clams in the end. So out of touch with reality and incredulous is this film, that despite the all-star cast, I consider it an exhaustive pool of pony vommit.

I found the beginnning of the film to be really funny, well-scripted, believable and i really connected with the characters in the early scenes. Unfortunately, for me, the film then went way off course and then tried to fit into some sort of mould that it couldnt be comfortable in. It seemed to me to be strangley edited and inconsistent in the flow of the story and character development. Some really touching moments towards the end of the film felt out of place and try-hardy, whereas if the film had been edited differently and allowed to flow breath these moments would have been completely killer. Shame.

Being a HUGE Sex and the City fan I really couldnt love Sarah Jessica Parker as this woman. I did feel sorry for her apparent lack of self-esteem, and her relationship with Dermot Mulroneys character was a sham. I was hoping they would split from the begining. The thing that was actually quite great about this movie was Thad, the deaf character. Being an interpreter for the deaf it was so great to see a deaf character being treated like a normal person, and so funny to have Meredith yelling at him. That happens so much to the deaf in real life. The movie was enjoyable, but I am glad I waited to rent it.

I found that the starting of this film is very stail but after the bar scene the story line picks up and the pathetic funniness dissapears and the storyline picks up and has a good heartfelt ending. I give the first half a one star and the second half a two star making my rating three stars.

My husband and I saw this movie in the theater knowing very little about it. The cast attracted me and I had expected it to be a comedy. Although there were some laugh out loud moments for us, we were surprised to find that it was really more sentimental and at times heartbreaking. What touched my heart was the relationship between Keaton and Nelsons characters as man and wife, and the love and protection of a mother(Keaton) extended to her children. Each with their own unique talents and struggles. This just seemed to me a beautiful film embodying everything a good movie should. Love, laughter, tears and expectation. I would recommend this movie!

Posted: 3/9/2006A review of The Family Stone by ♥_Kylie_♥
Need I say more.. .this woman is so ugly that I cant believe it. Why do people keep putting her in movies? Is it because people only go to see the movies because they cant believe how ugly she is and they have to see it to believe it?

The Family Stone is a good hearted tear jerker that for many movie goers hits close to home. The film shows Merideth Morton a rather cold, cut throat business woman who is introduced to her out of control futre family in-law during Christmas vacation. What the family doesnt know of is the tragedy that their currently facing. Although this film is advertised as a comedy, this is a heartbreaking tearjerker with an upbeat punchline. The best part though is the fact that theres alot left to the imagination, nothing is ever said just implied. A perfect film for the whole family during the holiday season as long as you bring an extra package of tissues.

What a funny and entertaining holiday movie. Im so glad I got to see it before it went dvd. Sarah Parker rules this film with a tour de force as a chilly and bumbling overly conservative potential newcomer to the (supposedly) laid-back Family Stone. To see her character being broken down and reinvented is a tribute to Ms Parkers charm and natural acting abilities. Its apparent that the fact that she was overlooked for major award consideration is a shame. Every other cast member is so talented and a major Hollywood player. D Keaton plays an ironic domineering queen bee to the hippy clan who is as hardheaded and unbending as they come, one who is forced to change her ways in order to keep the hive structure together. Rachel McAdams draws on her Mean Girls personna, perfectly nasty. Luke Wilson, in from San Francisco, is hunky and irresistable as usual as the quirky brother character. Whos heart wouldnt he melt... oops did I say too much? If you like romanctic comedies and slapstick such as Meet the Parents, you should love The Family Stone.
