Poor Jabez Stone struuggles in vain against one mishap after another try to run his farm and keep Miser Stevens from the door. Then one day he mutters a fateful bargain supposedly to himself and catches the ear of a wily stranger with a wry grin who calls himself ";Scratch";. Mr. Scratch begins to show Neighbor Stone the quick and easy path in exchange for the paltry possession of his mortal soul. Beleaguered by his woes, Jabez signs an unholy contract. After first marvelling over his new-found fortune, he soon realizes that his easy success and new Nurse are costing him far more than he had ever anticipated and now he must run for help to the great lawyer and statesman Daniel Webster who cracks open a new jug of spirit and proceeds to meet the Devil on his own terms. A sparkling, faithful rendition; true to the story in wonderful detail featuring a choice ensemble of Huston and Arnold. A Noble Classic. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-1 of 1 Per Page | ||
