This movie did a great injustice to the original movie. I would have turned the movie off after the first 10 minutes, but I was stuck on a plane and had nothing better to do. To say the least, it put me to sleep so I slept the rest of the flight. Movie execs have no creativity or originality. 9.5 out of 10 movies ^*#$ these days.

I thought this movie was EXCILLENT, although everyone else in the family thought it was terrible. It had great actors and actresses in the movie with a great director. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

I watched the original as a child, and even met Kevin McCarthy in New York one time in the lobby of "Our Town" when Paul Newman did that revival a few years ago. Oh, wait... that was Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Never mind. Keanu Reeves certainly is a one-trick pony compared to Michael Rennie. Even Gort had more screen prescence than this modern "mo-Bot". The modern movie went nowhere, and it made me appreciate the flow of the original much more. The message in the original was much more clear, and I'm proud to be an American because Klatu's advice was taken to heart and we have destroyed all our nuclear warheads and world peace is the norm. What? It's not? You mean...??? Oh... never mind.

What we humans are doing now is horrible. We are leaving trash everywhere, giving off to much carbon dioxide and treating each other horrible.Imagine if this Alien actually came? would we change? No we wouldnt because there are to many ignorant people out there. Thanks to them in our future life its most likely we will all die if this event falls upon us.Choas will come and the lucky ones will live.Until this day we are not sure when we all will die from a Alien,Natural Disasters,Meteor or such(excluding God reign of fire because that is fake).

I had been patiently expecting The Day to be a blockbuster event, expecting a better than the original was (The Day #1 is a terrific sci-fi, a very good film for its time) movie, however, it was'nt what I had expected. Still a good film none the less, but the hype of Klatu coming to earth and promoting peace never really developed in this movie or keep on plot with the original. So disappointing I quess. Fantastic special effects, moments of spectacular. But not that great!

I was expecting to see a great movie, but I was sadly mistaken. It was so bad I wanted to walk out, but every time I got ready to leave, I sat back down hoping something would happen to encourage me to want to stay. By the time it was over I didn't even realize it was over. Please save your money and wait for it on tv.

Seeing the original movie and watching the newer version had me realizing how the older movie made a lot more sense. In my opinion I thought the structure of the movie could've been written better as well as the ending of the story line. The newer version was viewable but isn't worth buying when it's released on DVD.

I have seen the original movie as a child and then again as an adult. I have had my kids watch the original too so they did not go seeing this without knowing what the other was like. I did like this film. While films are remade all the time, one must remember that sometimes there are remakes that might seem to be reconfigured to the point of no return, but I felt this one had been remade to the point of enjoyment and maybe a different storyline for some of the characters...remember the Gort was the same only taller, and Klaatu was the same but for the actor. The story line with the woman and child was updated to what we are used to in the world of today...they were not trying to remake it as it was done in the '50s but remade it to fit in today's world. So why not just go enjoy a movie you are familiar with and watch it with a different set of eyes? The messages in the film may put some people off but you can not go and pick apart a film over some few controversial ideas other people have...if they did not have those this world would be BORING.

I think this was a great film! I thought Keanu did an excellent job. I would like to see an uncut version, though. For the only thing I saw that could have been imporved upon was the attration between Klaatu and the girl, which was definitely there in the original movie. I highly suspect it was over-edited...something which has been happening to a LOT of movies lately. And I also believe that the plot was simply not understood by many of the many movie-goers. There was a depth there that I feel was missed by many, judging from the negative voters here. I totally loved it! And I definitely intend to own a couple of copies.

i have to say i was very disapointed in this movie. i kept watching hoping it would improve. the idea was good, but that is all....there was noting more than an idea. i don't go to the theater to see movies very often ( have many children!) and i wish i had chosen some other movie. i felt ripped off. don't waste your cash pick another movie!

The only thing that stood still were the chase scenes. They forgot to develope the plot. If you haven't seen the original movie, give yourself a treat - watch it and forget about going to this abortion of a movie. I don't know why they bothered to remake it if they were going to put out such a poor effort. They took a well made classic movie and raped it for profit.

Its annoying to read all the one lined reviews as if people could sum up whats wrong with a film in one sentence. To start off, don't pay attention to any review that has one simple minded opinion to express. This movie was better than many lead on. People say Keanu Reeves couldn't act, thats because he is playing exactly what his character would do. When was the last time an alien had emotional and dramatic human interaction? Never. And people saying the remake was better, maybe if you were born back then, but I've actually seen both movies and I thought with the modern setting this version pulled it off. The effects were not excessive but necessary to fit the modern world the movie was set it. The original movie was set in the 50's or so and the only real threat was a couple guns and tanks. This version had to take care of satellites, missiles, and all the high tech weaponry our world holds today. Over all, good film, worth the hype, and above all, not for the simple minded fools who know everything about movies.

I was really looking forward to this moving. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, but I do like the original so I did have a glimmer of optimism that today's technology would only enhance the original concept and appearance. I live in the NW and am very environmentally conscientious, but this movie crammed in about as much PC-save the planet-lingo as possible. Not only was it a little preachy and perfect for the tree huggers, it also managed to throw in some interracial dimensions with the addition of Jennifer Connelly's stepson from a mixed marriage, which I can only gather was to further promote the notion of "can't we all just get along". I don't think you could have gotten more packed into a movie so I must admit to expecting to see a few Toyota Prius hybrid cars driving thru, but then it would counter the bad, wasteful human profile that the movie was pushing. What can I say about the characters that I don't think was glaringly obvious. Just pretty people filling the screen. It may make me sound a little prejudice and jaded, but Jennifer Connelly's character was so unbelievable due to her presence on the screen and was unconvincing to me as a professor/scientist. Could she possible be more sleek and opposite of the stereotype of a scientist? Sorry, but I never saw anyone like that while I was in college that wasn't in a sorority. Even the little boy was too cute with this angelic curly locks. Keanu Reeves (nice to look at, but not exactly an actor's actor) played the role about the way that I thought he would and you couldn't ask for a more unemotional actor, but even Rennie's portrayal in the original was more sympathetic and believable. The effects were good but brief and couldn't save the gratuitous story line and lack of depth of characters. This optimizes why when redoing a classic, you have to take care to stay true to the original concept and stay true to those appealing aspects of the original. Keep in mind that there is a reason why the origin...

1 out of 2 users found this helpful  To many petty political statements
Posted: 12/29/2008A review of The Day the Earth Stood Still by RogerOne0
The original was one of the best science fiction movies ever made. The original 1951 focus was actually quite simple and elegant, co-operative survival at a world level to avert self distruction. This movie confuses the original focus with petty political misdirections that are stupid- when thought thru. Making a series of assumptions regarding the inevitable future of our planet to draw an exagerated conclusion for petty political purposes. This movie loses it previous focus relative to who really can lead the earth as an international society away from it's past: individual country politicians or international scientists. I thought the portrayal of the US as a corrupt and selfish nation- both political and military, was an insult. For those aspects of the original that still remain I give this movie a boost to 3 stars.
